Special Needs Work With Children

Get Involved

Make a Difference in Their Lives

In the coastal town of Mancora you can make a difference in the lives of special needs children and teenagers. This center provides physical therapy and development to the children, but they have no funds to employ permanent staff. You can help by getting involved with a variety of activities including arts, crafts, dance and playtime. Located just over an hour from the Peru-Ecuador border, Mancora is considered to be one of the most beautiful areas of Northern Peru with its endless summer and enchanting beaches.

Teach English as a Foreign Language Certificate (TEFL) included in this project worth £195. Insurance and accommodation are also included in this project.

The Facts

Placement details:
We work with the Divino Jesus Association in Mancora, Northern Peru. It was set up in 2003 with the aim of offering therapy to children suffering from blindness, deafness and dumbness as well as disabilities like Downs Syndrome. The children are aged between 3 and 19 and have not previously been given any special care or attention.

Why the placement needs volunteers:
There is a very limited budget to employ permanent staff so volunteers are essential to support the project.

What kind of skills you need to go on this type of placement:
You need to be compassionate, affectionate, patient and you should really enjoy working with children ! It would help if you are reasonably independent as this placement is quite isolated, being a good distance from the capital, Lima.

Your role as a volunteer:
As a Peru volunteer you can get involved in a wide range of activities such as dance, arts, crafts, and helping with playtime. You may get a chance to get involved with physical therapy as well.

Where the placement is based:
The placement is based in the small town of Máncora, which is about an hour away from the Ecuador border on the northern Peru coastline, where it is summer all year round, and surfing is a common sport. It is about 13/14 hours bus ride away from Lima. There are some facilities in the town itself like internet access, pharmacies etc. There are ATM machines for Visa/Mastercard. You will be staying in a family owned guesthouse along with the other volunteers.
