Building in Ecuador

Make a lasting impact

Help Improve Basic Living Conditions

You can help make a lasting impact working on building projects and improving the basic living conditions of a family living in dire poverty in the slums of Quito. We have teamed up with an international organisation where you can help build a latrine to improve their basic sanitation needs. This is a real hands-on project where you help with construction from start to finish. The best bit is seeing the results of your work as you see the direct benefit in helping families improve their basic living conditions.

Accommodation and Insurance are included in this project.

The Facts

Placement details:
Ninez International is non governmental organisation founded in 1989 with the aim of improving the education and quality of life of Quito's poorer neighbourhoods. Many of these areas lack basic services like sewerage and running water. This causes infections and illness to the population. Some of the families living in these neighbourhoods do not even have adequate sanitation facilities. It is this specific need that Ninez International are addressing through this project.

Why the placement needs volunteers:
Ninez International runs with limited resources for its operations. Volunteers are invaluable in supporting and providing further manpower to this much needed work which is making vital improvements to the local people’s living conditions.

What kind of skills you need to go on this type of placement:
You will need to be willing to get involved in hard work and be very hands on and willing to get involved in anything that is asked of you. You have a love of the outdoors and not mind working in any weather. You will need to be easy going and be able to work alongside the local community as much of your time will be spent with the families. Building experience is not necessary but if you have a specific skill it will be welcomed.

Your role as a volunteer:
This project is estimated to take around 3 weeks to construct 1 latrine. You will therefore be working on a project from start to finish where you can directly see the tangible benefit to the family that you are working alongside. You will help with all aspects of construction as well as indirectly helping the local community with ad hoc English lessons!

Where the placement is based:
Accommodation is at a comfortable homestay in Quito. As a large capital city, Quito has all the facilities you could need from telephone and Internet cafes, to all types of shops, bars and restaurants. The city is well serviced with public transport. You can expect to travel approx 1 hr across the city from your homestay to your project.

You will need to arrive at Quito International Airport.
