Once you arrive it's hard to believe you're in Europe's most densely populated country, but the cities are where the crowds are. Amsterdam is famed for its liberal attitudes, street cafes, clubs, galleries and museums. Visit the Rijksmuseum and gaze in awe at Rembrandt's 'Nachtwacht' (nightwatch) or the Van Gogh museum to examine the sunflowers up close. Sit in a café and watch the world go by, take a stroll through the red light district or breathe in the delights of one of Europe's most laid back capitals! The less visited cities and towns, like Delft, The Hague and Rotterdam are also worth seeing, and are a great way to avoid the crowds of tourists that clog up Amsterdam's narrow streets in the summertime. Hire a bike and see the country as the locals do. It's usually much quicker to get from a to b on a bike than it is in a car or taxi as the country is so flat and everything is so compact. The Netherlands is an at first strange mix of cultures; a country renowned for liberal drug and prostitution laws, but where everyone sits down at the same time for dinner and the trams always run on time!
