Frequently asked questions

There are always a hundred and one questions when we choose to go travelling, STA Travel are here to help you answer these enquiries.

Which route shall I take?

There is no straightforward answer to this question. We would suggest that you think about the time of year you intend to start your trip and head for the good weather and travelling conditions, being wary of monsoon. To make this easy for you we’ve created our very own round the world route planner so that you can create your trip. How much will it cost?

There are some great deals available as the price of your ticket is always based on the date you leave the UK, not on the dates you travel thereafter. Prices will change seasonally, so if you are flexible on destinations we will find the best deals available.

How long should I stay away for?

You may have planned a route and how many days you spend where, but you will never stick to them. Plans change, you meet people, you love one place and hate the next. The good thing about STA Travel tickets is that they allow you to change your mind as you travel.

Many of our round the world tickets are valid for a year, are refundable, date changeable and you can even get a credit value for an unused portion of your ticket. Visit our Travel Help section to get the low down on the range of tickets available.

Is it easy to get work?

The first thing to do is ensure that you have the necessary visas that allows you to work in that countries. Oz and NZ are the two most popular places to work legally, and they are often the mid-point on your round the world trip. Check out our 'Work & Learn' and 'Gap Year' sections where you’ll find out more about the options available to you whilst you travel.

Where will I stay?

Before you go, it’s always a good idea to book your first few nights accommodation so that you can find your feet. Plus, you don’t really want to be wandering around a strange city after a long journey.

Whilst you’re travelling, you could end up sharing accommodation if you’re staying long-term in a place: stay in hostels, hotels or even with friends and family. Don’t worry too much about where you’re going to rest your head. The best thing to do is take a look before you hand over any cash, whether it is a dorm in USA or a hut in Thailand, make sure it’s clean and safe. After all, you need to be happy and relaxed

How do I know it’s safe to travel in a particular country?

With a little common sense, most countries are relatively safe to travel in. If you’re heading to an area of potential unrest, call the Foreign Office Advice Centre on 020 7008 0232 or visit their website.

What happens if I lose my ticket?

If you lose your STA Travel ticket, you can contact one of our 450 branches worldwide. If you are unable to visit a branch, you can contact our UK Travel Help Centre by phone, fax or email. They will give you assistance and advice and soon you’ll be back on the road.
