About New South Wales
Learn about our tips and insider information on the well-known (and lesser-known) attractions of Sydney plus the city's best events and festivals.
| The weather |
New South Wales lies in the temperate zone and the climate is generally free from extreme heat and cold. Sydney has a mild, sunny, Mediterranean climate. The rest of the state has warm semi-tropical summers, particularly in lower central areas. Mountain areas in the west are cooler, particularly in winter – but in Sydney even in the winter you’ll be able to spot the Brits a mile off in their shorts and flip flops! You will want to wrap up warm in the snowy mountain region where winter frosts and snow are experienced over long periods. |

In a classic but very cool style you can’t deny the photographically inspired phenomenons of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Send us in your interesting snaps and you could even end up on next year’s cover! Take the ferry to Manly for a different harbour view. |
| Useful info |
On the first Saturday of March, Sydney celebrates Mardi Gras. This fabulously famboyant celebration is a real eye opener. Whatever your sexual preference, you’ll not want to miss it! |
| Useless info | New South Wales was the first part of Australia to be settled by Europeans. Apparently these first European settlers in Australia drank more alcohol per person than any other community in the history of mankind. So not much has changed then eh? |
