About Tasmania

Tasmania is an island for nature lovers. Its separation from the mainland by Bass Strait has protected the Tasmanian wildlife and the state is now home to several endangered animals including the Eastern Quoll, Eastern Barred Bandicoot and of course the Tasmanian Devil.

My favourite experience
"Running along the infinitely long, aptly named ‘friendly beaches’ with only the wind in my hair and nature’s other elements to keep me company was one of the most exhilarating experiences of all my time in Oz. The landscape was rugged but insanely beautiful and the sand was so fine it squeaked beneath my feet. That pretty much sums up all of Tassie actually. A bit of an undiscovered gem and absolutely worth the visit..." Sarah, Poole
The weather
For this rugged little island – only a little smaller than Scotland – the weather differs from mountain top to coastal flop. Peaks get as high as 1500m/4921ft in places – fully exposed to the stormy westerly winds, which bring heavy rainfall. Hobart has much less rain with changeable weather. The winters are mild and the summers a little cooler with a similar climate to Brittany or Northwest Spain, but it’s generally a lot sunnier.
Temperatures can reach up to 38ºC.

Perfect picture
After an invigorating hike up through Freycinet National Park, stop at the Wineglass Bay lookout. Find an unsuspecting soul to take your photo. Aptly named, the bay resembles a wine glass and will have you dreaming of all the finer things in life... and winning the lottery, probably.

Useful Info
Each year the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race runs - starting from Sydney on Boxing Day, culminating with the winning boats arriving into Constitution Dock in Hobart just in time for New Year’s Eve. Festivities ensue around the massive Taste of Tasmania – the perfect time to try a wallaby or ostrich burger. Yum!

Useless Info
“Taz” the animated Looney Tunes character is based on the real-life carnivorous marsupial found exclusively on Tasmania. The picture above might make it look cute and cuddly, but beware it boasts sharp teeth and one of the most powerful bites of any mammal, and they’ll eat pretty much anything! Grrrrrrrrr......

Try before you fly..
Tasmanian sparkling wine has got the french Champagne houses quaking in their boots. Snap it up!
