Gershwin

Definitely one of the funkiest hotels in New York with its Warhole-esque artistic flare. Beyond the eye catching exterior and reception, every corner is filled with fantastic art. Exihibitons, wine and cheese evenings and poetry slams are held each month. You won’t be disappointed whether you’re in the opulent private rooms or 'bunker' dorms.

The check in was easy and fuss free, the people at the desk were extremely helpful. You couldnt ask for a better location, its in mid town so accessible to all parts of Manhatten and near to the bus/train terminals. Theres a subway not too far from the hotel, you walk out and bang infront of you is the Empire State building..Welcome to New York! The room was clean and basic, an excellent price for the location.

it was right in the centre of new york city, was close to good transport links, was clean, beds were comfortable, staff were friendly and helpful, cheaper to stay here than out in the bronx if consider transport costs, easy to find. have now stayed twice on two seperate occasions and would stay again

Trendy hostel in an excellent location

The best thing about the hostel is definately the location, which is just off fifth ave making getting around easy. The hostel/hotel is very stylish however this rapidly declines once you get into the room, particularly if you are staying in a dorm. However the competitive price makes up for this.

There werent any best bits apart from the good location. This was sold to us as a hostel. It had no facilities you would expect. No phone, no internet, no common room, no kitchen, no temperature control in the room either. The place also looked in desperate need of redecoration. As a backpacker I was not impressed but I would have been less impressed had I paid for the hotel rooms that were quite pricy after being faced with a rather rundown hostel.

Enjoyed the space of the library...everything was pretty poor. I was travelling with my boyfriend and had arranged to stay in a dorm room together. Apon arrival we were told he had been moved to a different room due to over subscription and they were unable to move anyone else instead. This was the first time I had seen by boyfriend for well over a month and totally ruined the meeting and made our time much less comfortable and awkward in New York. There were strick rules (although I understand the reason behind those), we felt under suspision from the staff who clearing did not believe we would respect the rules which of course we did...however I would note that many of the other guests did not. We were made to feel that we had done something wrong and in fact to was the hotel who had split us up. On top of that, on our first night, having arrived early afternoon to claim a bed in the dorm by placing my things on a fresh bed, at 1am I was top very harshly from a girl who was already staying in the dorm that it was her bed and instructed me to leave it (you could tell this was not true due to the new linen). I was made to sleep that night in someone elses sheets which did little to make my trip better. I felt threaten by her and did not feel safe enough even to report it that night, knowing I would still be forced to share a room with her. Overall I did not enjoy my stay at all

Great price for a central location and small dorm so quiet. Breakfast not included but there's a cafe downstairs which will serve food in the library which has comfy sofas, and they'll give you a code for free wifi when you buy something.

it is in a really good location for seeing the sights so if you dont have much time it is probably worth paying the price to get the most out of your time NYC. the lobby area of the Gershwin is really nice with comfy sofas and the rooms are well presented and clean just verryyy small. One bathroom 10 people just doesnt really work especially in the morning!

Artsy Vibes

I thoroughly enjoyed being able to walk out of the hostel, turn a corner & be confronted by a stunning view of the Empire State Building. This provided a fantastic landmark to help me find my way home at night. One member of staff on reception was absolutely fabulous & helped me with maps, sorting out my airport transfers etc but a couple of the others were less friendly & difficult to understand. The hostel was extremely clean but there were no lockers in my dorm to keep valuables safe. Bedding was provided & the room was cleaned regularly. I didn't come across any communal areas where I could socialise with other travellers but then again, I was too busy looking around the city. I found this hostel a safe & comfortable place to be. It has an extremely artsy vibe which I loved & funky decor. It was very different & individual.

The location was definitely the best part of staying in the Gerschwin: literally 15 minutes or so away from the Empire State. However, because of overbooking my friend and I were moved from the dorm room we had originally booked and into a double. The problem was there was another person in the room! So one of us had to sleep on a roll out bed, pretty unacceptable when you're paying for a normal bed.
