Get down with the kids and clued up on the confusing lingo that you could come across when booking a round the world trip...
| • AIR TAXES Yes, we know it rhymes with “Air Taxis”, but it’s not 2056 yet. We’re talking about the taxes imposed by governments for travelling to/from/ through their country. Rumour has it there’s a tax for standing still too. • BACKTRACKING Standard RTW tickets are all about following your nose around the world, in one sweeping movement. As STA Travel isn’t your standard travel company, we offer a range of fares with 100 airlines which allow you to backtrack without restrictions. • DIRECT vs. INDIRECT London to Bangkok = Direct. London to Dubai to Bangkok = Indirect. London to Bangkok to London to Bangkok to London = Loop the loop. • FUEL SURCHARGE This is the cost (surcharge) of the fuel (fuel). Unless you’re on a paper plane, you’ll need to stump up. • MINIMUM vs. MAXIMUM STAY These two show you the period of time you’re allowed to stay in your destination. • MULTI -STOP The complete, and utter opposite of a point-to-point flight; these frisky ticket types put it about a bit, by including two or more destinations. • OPEN JAW This type of ticket won’t eat you. But it will let you fly into one city, and out of another. Perfect for overland tours that start and end in different countries. Or if you’re prone to getting very, very lost. • OVERLAND or SURFACE The art of touring OVERLAND, or over the SURFACE, as oppose to skipping out the best bits while you nibble peanuts at 40,000 ft. Hint: this section is full of SURFACE products. • ROUND THE WORLD (RTW) Do it in 80 days. Do it in 80 ways. Do it in your flowery Y-fronts if you want, but if you want to claim you’ve been round the world, you’ll need a trip that includes one trans-Atlantic and one trans-Pacific flight. • SEASONS Nothing to do with football. Nowt to do with Vivaldi. Diddly-squat to do with winter. We’re talking about the high and low season, which dictates the price of air tickets. Public and school holidays form the highs, while the lows settle in between. • STOPOVER Stay in one place for 24 hours, and you’ve earned yourself the coveted Stopover Badge. This makes you cool. And cultured. And wise. And rested. • TRANSIT When you’re travelling on an indirect flight (10 bonus points available), and your connecting flight is within 24 hours, you’re “in transit”. Don’t worry, this has nothing to do with white vans. ![]() |
