The Vampires (the Cullen Coven)

Who: Carlisle, Esme, Edward, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie and Jasper

What you need to know:
Vampires have pale skin that when exposed to sunlight sparkles like diamond, and is as hard as diamond too.

Vampires cannot be shot, stabbed, or ‘staked’.

Vampires eyes change colour according to how much blood they have consumed. Black means thirst, Red means well-fed on human blood, Gold means well-fed on animal blood.

Vampires are superhuman in speed, strength, ability, co-ordination and all senses.

Some vampires have supernatural abilities – for examples, Edward can read minds, Alice can see the future, Jasper controls emotional climates.

Vampires can only be destroyed by being torn to pieces and burning the ashes, which can only be done by vampire or werewolves.

The Cullens are good vampires and represent light.

The Volturi are the ruling body of vampires and live in an ancient Tuscan city, ‘Volterra’. They include Aro, Caius, Marcus, Jane and Demetri and protect the secret of vampires by wiping out any ‘problems’ as vampire law defines.

The Newborn Vampires

Who: Victoria (creator of the newborn army), Riley, Bree

What you need to know:
Vampires are considered ‘newborns’ when they have been vampires for less than one year. They are physically stronger than other vampires because of the residual blood still in their veins. They are vicious, with an insane thirst, and at their most deadly in the first seven months.

Creating a vampire requires much discipline in order to avoid drinking all the victim’s blood and killing them. It only requires one bite, but additional bites will release more venom and speed up the process (usually 2-3 days).

Newborn armies are created because newborn vampires rely on brute strength rather than skill to win a fight, rather than skill. The vampire creating the army would expect many to be killed in battle as a resuls.

Newborns are difficult to keep under control, and can easily destroy each other or expose themselves to humans with careless hunting patterns – they must be watched carefully.

Any average newborn can be defeated by an older vampire who know what he/she doing, which is why newborns are usually created in armies with the sole purpose of destroying a coven.

Victoria was originally part of James’ coven, a merciless ‘tracker’ vampire who killed
humans and animals for fun. When James was killed by the Cullens, Victoria set out to avenge his death. She creates an army of blood-thirsty newborn vampires in Eclipse.

The Werewolves

Who: Sam Uley, Jacob, Jared, Paul, Embry Call, Quil, Leah Clearwater, Seth Clearwater

What you need to know:
Werewolves are not affected by the moon, silver, or any other traditional wolf banes.

The wolves communicate through a pack mind. They are fast, strong, run at a higher body temperature than humans and heal from injuries almost immediately.

The werewolf phasing process is an immediate, explosive transformation. They transform from human to wolf almost immediately.

Becoming a wolf for the first time is generally preceded by fever and occurs during puberty.
