Top 5 African safaris

Lions, giraffes, zebras, leopards, rhinos, warthogs, cheetahs, hippos, meerkats, monkeys and loads more wonderfully wild animals. Get scarily close to them all… here are our top 5 African safaris.

Safaris

5. Okavango Delta, Botswana
Imagine a lush verdant land intersected by thousands of slow moving rivers and dotted with overgrown puddles of wildlife infested waters. Cruise down these tranquil African waterways in a traditional canoe (a mokoru) weaving your way around lurking crocodiles, and drifting past wading elephants and lazy hippos. Situated in Northern Botswana, the Okavango Delta is one of most surreal experiences in Africa.

4. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda
As downright exciting, mysterious and exotic as it sounds, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Western Uganda is home to half the world’s population of the highly endangered Mountain Gorilla. Anyone fortunate enough to have a close encounter with one of these big, loveable lumps will be reeling off the tale to anyone within listenable distance until the end of time.

3. Kruger National Park, South Africa
Home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, hippos and just about anything else you can imagine (except badgers). Kruger is about the same size as Wales, and that is probably where the similarity ends. Situated in the northeast of South Africa, close to Johannesburg – Kruger National Park is considered to the most bio-diverse game reserve on Earth.

2. The Masai Mara, Kenya
Choc a bloc with all kinds of amazing wildlife – the Masai Mara is effectively Kenya’s northern continuation of the Serengeti in Tanzania. Amongst the elephants, lions and rhinos walk beautifully attired Masai tribesmen. Animals are everywhere the whole year round – but the annual migration between July and October is a particularly special time to visit.

1. The Serengeti, Tanzania
Think back to all those wildlife documentaries and the wild wonders of Africa you imagined were the exclusive domain of jammy TV presenters. Wrong. Just about every wild and wonderful African animal can be found on the endless plains of the Serengeti, and its all yours if you want it. Stretching over a massive stretch of  Northern Tanzania – safari dreams don’t come any better than this.
