Jungle Adventure in Borneo - Volunteering

  • 14Day(s)
  • Trip Code: STCAMBRN

Get off the well-trodden backpacker trail and experience authentic culture and traditions, living and working alongside rural Malay locals. According to your trip destination, you'll rotate through a range of camps, working on a number of community, wildlife and environmental projects. If you opt to volunteer at the island's community initiative, work may involve painting classrooms, making local arts and crafts, teaching sports and planting crops. Alternatively, if you pick the jungle project, you'll help reforest areas while being privy to amazing wildlife viewing - if you're lucky you'll spot endangered orang-utans - and help with beach clean-ups and raising environmental awareness among communities.

Day 1: Arrival

You'll be scooped up from the Kota Kinabalu airport and transferred to your centrally-located hostel for some downtime and a preliminary briefing.

Day 2: Camp International

Head off to your first camp for an initial briefing and local orientation. Accommodation will vary between traditional Malaysian longhouses, tents, and the occasional hammock!

Day 3: Volunteering Project

You'll volunteer at an idyllic island or jungle location, or both if stating for longer than one month. Locations and activities may vary but much of the work focuses on improving facilities within communities. Evenings and weekends are free for day-tripping, mountain climbing and relaxing. Typical camps:

Island: Camp Mantanani

Volunteers at Camp Mantanani will help to improve the day-to-day life of the islanders, learn about the unique marine life, and assist the turtle conservation projects. You'll assist in conversational English classes, take part in regular beach clean-ups, and work on construction projects to improve facilities for the island. There'll also be time to learn traditional songs, dances and handicraft techniques.

Jungle: Camp Bongkud

Based in the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, this is the largest of the camps in Borneo. You'll help develop the community centre, construct and restore footbridges for the village, and assist in conversational English classes at the local school. There'll also be opportunities to pick up traditional instruments, learn about permaculture, and test your sporting prowess on local children.
