Amazon Adventure & Coastal Communities in Ecuador - Volunteering

  • 29Day(s)
  • Trip Code: STCAMECU

Improve living conditions and education standards on this varied project, which also includes a place on an iconic trail to Machu Picchu. Live and work in three of Peru's high sierra regions, namely Colca, Moray and Titicaca. Help alleviate malnutrition issues among local children by working on the vegetable gardens and take part in local micro finance initiatives. The project will also require you to carry out some physical work as you muck in with construction tasks like plastering and landscaping. Below itinerary is an example for the Camp Ecuador Andes & Amazon (1 month). There is also the 1 month option for Camp Ecuador Pacific Coast & Amazon as well as 2 month options. Ideally you can combine Camp Ecuador with Camp Peru to a perfect 3 month adventure!!

Project Overview

The Ecuador programme varies between camp locations and this is dependent on both time of travel and duration of trip. The core projects focus on improving community facilities, refurbishing local schools and creating employment opportunities for the local people. You may help build a new medical dispensary, refurbish a nursery school, teach conversational English and more!

Day 1-2: Welcome to Ecuador

You fly into Quito and will be met at the airport by a member of the team before being transferred to your accommodation in the city (approx. 1-hour transfer). You first day will be spent in the town of Tena and you have some free time to explore.

Day 3: Camp Amazonia

Today we will make our way to the mighty Camp Amazonia! Get ready for the humidity and remember to pack your bug spray and sunscreen. The journey is generally between 4-5 hours and we recommend a good ipod playlist to accompany the beautiful journey views.

Day 4-11: Project Work

Project work begins! Projects here are varied but largely focus around the local primary school. You will work with us on a number of initiatives to improve infrastructure and provide safe and productive learning environments for local children.

Day 12-13: Chill out in Banos

You will spend the next couple of days visiting the nearby town of Baños. This vibrant town is a popular stop for backpackers. It boasts some amazing walking routes, waterfalls, zip lining, canyoning, rafting, great bars and wonderful restaurants.

Day 14: Explore Quito

Today we head back to Quito and you have a free afternoon and evening to spend there.

Day 15-21: Camp Kuru Kucho

We head to the stunning Camp Kuri Kucho today! This camp has a beautifully picturesque setting, with glaciered mountains on the horizon and a wonderful neighbouring community. Your time here provides you with a unique insight into the day-to-day lives of a rural Andean community and projects are designed to help retain the culture and heritage of these fascinating people.

Day 22: Otovalo

Today we will visit the charming market town of Otavalo, home to the biggest craft market in South America. Have some fun bartering for artisanal goods and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere in the town.
