Day 1 Chiang Mai / Doi Mae Salong

After being picked up from your hotel between 9am and 9.30am, set off to the Golden Triangle region. Stop off en route at the Orchid and Butterfly farm and further on, the fiver interconnected Chiang Dao caves - it's the perfect introduction to this fascinating area. Head to the charming small town of Doi Mae Salong for steaming cup of traditional Chinese tea overlooking a landscape of misty mountains then make your way into the bustling markets, jam-packed full of produce and crafts made by hilltribe locals. You'll probably end up buying more than you carry back to the hotel in Mae Salong.

Day 2 Mae Sai / Golden Triangle / Chiang Saen

After breakfast, stop off at Mae Sai, the northernmost town in Thailand. A well-known trading post, you'll be spoilt for choice for Burmese lacquer ware, gems, jade and other precious goods from Laos and Burma. The journey continues on to the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. Tuck into lunch overlooking the mighty Mekong river then learn everything you can at the fascinating Opium museum. Say goodbye to dry land and climb aboard a long tail boat to float along the Khong river. Local rice whiskey distilleries sit on the banks of the river so stop and have a taste before visiting Chiang Saen, the ancient capital of the Lanna kingdom.

Day 3 Chiang Rai / Chiang Mai

Don't feel too disappointed when you begin the journey back to Chiang Mai - there's still plenty to see! Wat Rong Khun, or White Temple, is a beautiful but unconventional Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai and sits nearby the Mae Ka Chan hot springs. Not only do you get a rest from travelling to explore this architectural masterpiece but you can have a soothing soak and fish spa style foot massage, all while munching on quail eggs which have been cooked in the heat of the waters! Once you're back in Chiang Mai at 5pm, you're free to while away your time wandering the streets of this frenetic city. There are worse ways to end a trip.
