Volunteering Project Overview

Sitting on the southernmost tip of Africa, Gansbaai is the ‘Great White Shark Capital' of the world and provides daily sightings of these magnificent creatures. Most of your time at sea will be spent aboard an eco-tourism boat as a crew member, helping out with cage diving operations, observing sharks and collecting data. Don't be surprised if you also spot whales, dolphins, seals and penguins (the Big Marine 5)! Back on land, you may attend lectures on shark tracking, basic seamanship and shark biology and behaviour. Those staying longer will have more time for cage diving and there may even be opportunities to assist professional marine biologists with jobs such as shark egg collection, animal rescue and more. And even though the boat operates 7 days a week, you'll have plenty of time to explore the local area or simply chill by the pool as your volunteer house.
