Peru Adventure and Volunteer

  • 15Day(s)
  • Trip Code: STCUZADV

Volunteer in the history-steeped city of Cuzco, nestled deep in the Andes mountains. Surrounded by ancient Incan ruins, you'll work with children, teenagers and young adults helping them develop and strengthen their skills through art, sports, music, science, theatre and games. Your trip also includes two days' adrenaline activities - quad biking, rafting and ziplining - finishing up with a four-day trek to the archaeological site of Machu Pichu. So strap on your hiking boots and prepare for some Inco/pisco-induced soul-searching.

Day 1: Cuzco

Arrive in Cuzco and transfer to your accommodation. Acclimatise to the altitude with a cup of coca-leaf tea and a stroll around the city and enjoy an afternoon project briefing.

Day 2 - 5: Volunteering Project

Tuesday to Thursday you'll volunteer from 9.30am to 5.30 pm in a San Jeronimo school just 30 minutes from Cuzco. What you get involved in depends on your skill set and experience but general responsibilities include teaching English, reading, and leading creative activities with music, art and games.

Day 6: Cuzco Sightseeing

Volunteer in the morning and tour the cobblestoned centre of the world in the afternoon. Tick off the former Incan capital's ancient citadels, fortresses and amphitheatre.

Day 7: Sacred Valley

Get picked up and head for the hills of Cruz Pata. Hit the dirt roads on a thrilling quad bike tour, splashing through mud puddles as you motor across fields and villages towards Moray. Take in the Sacred Valley's intriguing Incan circular crop terraces and visit a local salt mine before returning to Cuzco.

Day 8: Vilcanota Valley

Get picked up and enjoy a scenic drive to Oropesa, a tiny Andean town famous for its homemade bread. More high-octane thrills follow with an afternoon's white water rafting on the rapids of Vilcanota River, finishing up with a zipline ride. Then it's back to Cuzco.

Day 9 - 10: Volunteering Project

Pick up where you left off in Cuzco, enjoying your last two days at the volunteering project. Say your goodbyes to smiling faces on Day 10.

Day 11 -13: Machu Picchu Trek

Depending on permit availability, take a 50km Inca Trail along original stone staircases or a Lares trek through local Inca villages up to the sacred city of Machu Picchu.

Day 14: Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes

Rise early to catch the sunrise and take a historical, guided walking tour of the city. Transfer by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch before catching the train to Ollantaytambo where you'll board the return bus to Cuzco.

Day 15: Flight Home

Transfer to the airport where your trip ends.
