Introduction

The Conservation Experience is a 2-week program (is it also possible to just do 1 week: Friday to Friday) which is suitable for people who enjoy outdoor activities, and want to be actively involved in conservation volunteer activities such as tree planting, track construction, wildlife surveys and heritage restoration projects. The volunteers you will be working alongside can come from a wide range of backgrounds: students, professionals, international visitors and retirees, all who come with the same experience in mind - to try their hand at something meaningful, unique and fun! You don`t need any prior skills or experience, just the willingness to get involved. Taking part in conservation volunteering is a great way to see different parts of Australia. Projects take place in different locations every week - they can be in urban areas or right away from the tourist areas. Volunteering is a great way to learn about preserving and protecting landscapes, habitats and natural resources. You will be taught all the skills required on-site, and receive comprehensive orientations. This Conservation Experience offers the chance to do something really different, to make a contribution, to enjoy outdoor living, and learn about conservation. All volunteers receive a certificate at the end of their experience to add to your CV, any altruistic project work always looks good with prospective employers!

A week in the life of a volunteer

The various projects in different locations are designed to enable you to make a real difference to conserving the environment. You will be part of a team of up to 10 volunteers, though sometimes teams are smaller depending on the task you're doing and the number of people choosing to volunteer that week. You'll be accompanied by a Volunteers Team Leader who will explain the project aims to you, and help you to complete each project safely and effectively. We cannot guarantee a choice of projects, nor are we able to provide an advance listing of the projects you will undertake. This is because these projects depend on seasonal conditions and conservation priorities. The project will do their best to ensure you experience a variety of projects or locations. Typical projects include: · Tree planting · Weed control · Seed collection · Construction and maintenance of walking tracks · Flora and fauna surveys · Habitat restoration · Heritage restoration You will usually spend one or two weeks at each project site. Conservation projects take place in both urban and rural areas - you might spend your time in a town or city, or in a more rural area. Project hours are usually from 8am - 4pm, although this varies according to conditions. Weekends are free for independent sightseeing or relaxing, with meals and accommodation provided at a hostel or house.
