Teach Children in South Africa

  • 15Day(s)
  • Trip Code: STSFACHI

Based on Cape Town's colourful coast, this project supports teachers and children at township schools and day cares. With classes of up to 50 children, the extra pair of hands you'll provide will be invaluable, giving 2 and 6 year olds the one-on-one attention they need. As well as teaching Maths and English and helping out on arts and crafts projects, you'll also assist the local community by running after school programmes for disadvantaged children. In your free time, visit Cape Town's markets, go dolphin spotting, or put yourself behind bars for a shark cage dive!

Day 1: Arrival

Volunteers will be picked up from Cape Town International Airport or their Cape Town accommodation and transferred to the volunteer town.

Day 2: Volunteering Project Orientation

On arrival, you'll be introduced to the surrounding area and all project staff. Then you'll be given a full orientation of your new neighbourhood and upcoming project. You could be in Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Langa, Mitchell's Plain, Nyanga, Athlone or Grassy Park. Often referred to as the “dumping ground of Apartheid”, the Cape Flats are a melting pot of different cultures, ethnicities and languages. Yet across these differences, there are many parallels such as crippling poverty, substance abuse, unemployment and HIV/AIDS.

Day 3 - 13: Volunteering Project Mornings and Afternoons

Mornings and afternoons will be spent assisting teachers at the schools, as well as helping out local community projects. You'll run after-school programmes for disadvantaged and vulnerable children in the community, help at a Grandmother`s program, uplift communities through literacy and numeracy, tutor students one-to-one and more! Volunteers will be rotating during the 5 days per week between pre-schools, sports development projects, after school care clubs, emergency care homes etc.

Day 3 - 13: Volunteering Project Evenings and Weekends

Evenings and weekends are yours to explore the beautiful Cape area. Optional activities can include day tours to Cape Point and Stellenbosch, trips to Robbin Island and Table Mountain, or shark cage diving!

Day 14: Departure

Depart at any time unless you can't bear to leave and opt to stay a bit longer!
