Volunteer Costa Rica

  • 15Day(s)
  • Trip Code: STSJOVOL

This voluntour is the perfect way to tick off some Costa Rican hotspots while giving back to Mother Nature along the way. Unspoilt cloud forests, Pacific coast surf and rugged volcanic landscapes make this Latin gem a top volunteering destination. Spend five days volunteering at a remarkable sea turtle conservation project which uses man-made nurseries called ‘viveros' to protect turtle eggs and nests. The programme assists endangered sea turtles and their hatchlings on Playa Montezuma, making sure that they are protected from predators and face the best chance of being released into the wild. After your good work is done, you'll have a week of getting your head in the clouds (kind of) and getting face-to-face with this diverse destination.

Day 1: San José

Arrive into the dynamic city of San José (airport transfer included) and head to your hotel to meet your fellow volunteers.

Day 2 - 7: Playa Montezuma / Sea Turtle Conservation Project

Leave San José behind you and make your way to Montezuma beach, located on the Nicoya peninsula on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Immerse yourself into a conservation project that protects endangered or critically endangered sea turtles, such as olive ridleys, leatherbacks, hawksbill and the Pacific black subspecies. Depending on the time of year and season, you'll help with nighttime beach patrols, reinforce the barriers of the hatcheries, monitor the baby turtle hatchery and assist with other areas' maintenance. You'll work between six and ten hours per day, depending on nesting intensity and commitments in the community. The majority of the work will take place at night, and daytime activities will depend on the project's needs and the weather.

Day 8 - 10: Playa Montezuma / La Fortuna

Travel to La Fortuna, at the base of the Arenal Volcano, an area brimming with colour, outstanding birdlife and monkeys. Enjoy winding nature trails, swimming in waterfalls as well as relaxing in tropical cascading hot springs and natural thermal baths. You'll also have the chance to visit an Arenal Volcano viewpoint and the artisan town of Sarchí. You'll have a free day on Day

Day 11 - 13: Monteverde Cloud Forest

Head inland towards the misty mountain air of Monteverde where a local guide will tell you about the conservation efforts to protect this precious ecosystem. On the El Trapiche Tour, a guided sugar cane and coffee tour will then teach you the ins and outs of traditional Costa Rican culture. Check out the birds of the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve and choose to get your pulse racing on an included zipline tour.

Day 14 - 15: San José

Transfer back to San José for some last minute shopping and your final evening. On Day 15, say your goodbyes to beautiful Costa Rica.
