The Sri Lanka Experience & Adventure

  • 29Day(s)
  • Trip Code: STSRIEAA

Breathe some life back into tired and colourless classrooms in Sri Lanka's Colombo, and make learning a more fun and comfortable experience for some of the country's poorest children. Renovating day centres and schools in the capital, you'll also get the chance to meet the people you'll be helping as well as local families who will welcome you into their homes. When you're not rolling up your sleeves, you'll be on the road discovering the 2,000 years of history that's packed into the tear-shaped island from Polonnaruwa's Royal Palace ruins to Kandy's sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic. Bring your voluntour to a close with a few days on the shores of Negombo before returning to the capital for your flight home.

Day 1-3: Colombo / Mihintale / Anuradhapura

Meet your local rep at Colombo Airport, transfer to your accommodation and get a run down of your itinerary. Then, your included city tour will take you to the colonial Fort, Pettah oriental bazaar, the Cinnamon Gardens, Independence Square and Raja Maha Vihara temple. Next up is the pagodas and temples of Mihintale - the birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhism - and ancient Anuradhapura.

Day 4-7: Anuradhapura / Giritale / Kandy

Anuradhapura is first up on Day 4, one of Sri Lanka's most important archaeological sites and where you'll visit temples, royal baths and the holy Sri Maha Bodhi tree. Day 5, call by UNESCO-listed Polonnaruwa and the rock temple of Gal Viharaya en route to Giritale. Next, visit the rock citadel of Sigriya before making your way to Kandy for a bullock cart ride.

Day 8-11: Nuwara Eliya / Yala National Park

Head for the hills to the lush tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya. Enjoy a free afternoon to soak up the town's unmistakably English feel then start early on Day 9 for Horton Plains for a hike to Bakers Fall. Day 10, it's on to Yala National Park where you'll spot elephants, leopard, bears and deer on half day safaris. Next morning, head to Bundala National Park bird sanctuary on the way back to Colombo.

Day 12-19: Colombo (Volunteering)

Spend a morning with the students at an English-medium school (where English is the primary language) and get an insight into the Sri Lankan education system, then meet your host family this evening. Take part in a dancing lesson and explore the city before starting your volunteering programme on Day 15. The project will focus on making classrooms more attractive and comfortable. Work will include drawing, painting and cleaning.

Day 20-29: Colombo / Negombo

The weekend is yours to spend at leisure in and around capital Colombo. On Day 22, you'll make your way to the tropical beach resort of Negombo where you'll be spoiled with warm seas, palm trees and sunshine. After breakfast on Day 29, transfer back to Colombo Airport and continue with your onward travel.
