Help Local Communities in Tanzania

  • 14Day(s)
  • Trip Code: STTANCOM

During your two weeks in vibrant Tanzania, you'll get stuck into a variety of projects and tasks. Typically, you'll volunteer from 9am to 5.30pm, with evenings and weekends to enjoy at your leisure. Activities include; organising social activities for elderly residents at an old people's home, teaching English and playing games with 2-7 year olds, helping with HIV awareness projects and assisting in language lessons for Maasai members. At night you'll stay in volunteer accommodation in the authentic rural village of Msaranga, close to modern Moshi. When not volunteering why not head out on safari, visit the white sand beaches of Zanzibar or trek to the basecamp of Kilimanjaro - it's on your doorstep after all!

Monday to Thursday - Education Project

Begin the day with breakfast before getting in the classroom and sharing your English language skills with the locals. You'll get the chance to teach all ages from nursery school to adulthood. After lunch at the African Impact volunteer house, you'll either continue teaching English or take part in an afterschool programme, educating secondary school students in AIDS awareness. At 5.30 it's time to relax, socialise and make the most of your time in Moshi.

Friday - Education Project

Get to know the inhabitants of Langoni Wazee, an old person's home run by the Moshi government. Take part in discussions, get involved with arts and crafts or assist the residents with some gentle exercise.

Monday to Thursday - Public Healthcare Programme

After breakfast you'll head to an old folk's home or a centre for children with special needs to assist with the day-to-day healthcare programme. Break for lunch and then you'll jump straight back into the community-based care activities such as teaching teenagers about health issues in secondary school health clubs.

Friday - Public Healthcare Programme

Friday is dedicated to Tumaini Women's Group. You'll take part in a cultural exchange of ideas and opinions, offering support to women with concerns about health and their standing in Tanzanian society.

Saturdays and Sundays

Free time to discover Africa's animal kingdom on a wildlife safari. Or step back in time and visit Tanzania's Stone Age sites where local tour guides can introduce you to traditional practices such as beekeeping and hunting with bushmen. Alternatively, go kayaking off white sand beaches, snorkel in Zanzibar or trek to the first base camp of Mount Kilimanjaro. Why not do a bit of fundraising while you're at it?!
