Nakavango Conservation Programme

  • 7Day(s)
  • Trip Code: STZIMCON

A mere ten minute drive from UNESCO World Heritage Site Victoria Falls, this project is based at the only ‘Big 5' Game Reserve in the area. Volunteers will engage in ‘behind the scenes' wildlife conservation, typically involving tree protection, gathering wildlife data removing invasive vegetation species. In addition, you'll pitch in with community development, assisting as rural schools with homework workshops, sports coaching and garden upkeep. And with a pool onsite there'll be plenty of time to socialise with your fellow volunteers.

Typical Volunteering Week

Volunteer duties on the Victoria Falls Conservation Experience will vary depending on the needs of the reserve. Below is a sample of a day-by-day itinerary for one week. (NB. Details of your own itinerary may not mirror this one).

Day 1 Arrival

Arrive at Victoria Falls International Airport and get transferred to Nakavango Conservation Centre. Spend the day settling in and orientating yourself with the surrounding area. If you're lucky, there might be time for an afternoon game drive.

Day 2: Project Orientation

After breakfast you'll receive a briefing on the upcoming project and then you'll be introduced to your volunteering responsibilities such as nursery and vegetable garden management. In the afternoon you'll visit one of Nakavango wildlife research projects.

Day 3: Volunteering Project

The morning is dedicated to presentations and educational talks for volunteers from guest speakers. In the afternoon you'll day trip to Victoria Falls for a guided tour of this thunderous natural wonder. Those who have already taken a tour are free to explore the town and go shopping.

Day 4: Volunteering Project

Spend the morning working on the ‘Children in the Wilderness' project and helping the schoolchildren with numeracy and literacy skills. The afternoon is spent working on aquatic health projects around watering holes, and preparing to go camping in the game reserve overnight.

Day 5: Volunteering Project

Foot patrol along fence, checking for incursions/fence damage and learning about wildlife tracks. Head into the game reserve at 1:30pm to carry out specific game research and monitoring tasks.

Day 6: Departure
