Talk about contrasts - nowhere is the changing face of China more apparent than on the road between Shanghai and Xian. You'll start this 14 day/13 night tour in Shanghai, a thriving hub of neon-lit madness, shopping, nightlife and a great blend of Eastern and Western culture - in short, it's modern day China at its best. By the tour's end, you'll find yourself in the walled city of Xian, one of the most historically rich cities in the country. Along the way you'll stop at the canal cities of Suzhou, with its heritage listed gardens, and Yangzhou, as well as the former capital of Nanjing - which has an incredibly amazing story to tell in its own right. It's on to Zhengzhou - this is Shaolin monk territory, and you'll get the once in a lifetime opportunity to take a lesson in kung-fu from genuine Shaolin monks.
  • Day 1: Shanghai

    You'll arrive in Shanghai and make your way to your first accommodation point, where you can take your time settling in and meeting your new travel buddies for the next two weeks. Use the evening as a chance to get to know each other, and the city, by going out for a delicious dinner at one of Shanghai's many restaurants.

  • Day 2: Shanghai

    Spend the day visiting all that Shanghai has to offer. Visit the French Concession, Xintiandi, The Bund and Nanjing Lu, See the skyscrapers in Pudong, catch a show, go shopping or enjoy the nightlife

  • Day 3: Shanghai to Suzhou

    Suzhou - Wander through the UNESCO listed gardens, or take a boat trip along the canals of this picture perfect city

  • Day 4: Nanjing

    Today you'll head to Nanjing, where you will be based for the next three days. Being the former capital of China, it's a great place to absorb some more Chinese history and culture. Take your time visiting any of the many museums, temples and other historical sites - follow your guide on a pre-arranged tour, plus there will be plenty of free time to explore in your own way as well. By night, there's just as much to keep you occupied - go out and paint the town red at any of the late-night bars found in the 1912 bar district.

  • Days 5 & 6: Nanjing

    Nanjing is rich in history, but also rapidly modernizing, it is second only to Shanghai in terms of economic output. It has retained and improved on its many historical sites and museums with the confronting Massacre Museum worth a visit. The former Imperial Palace, which was the central palace before being moved to Beijing 600 years ago is another site where you could spend a morning or afternoon. Walking around on foot is another great option, as is hiring a boat on the lovely and centrally located Xuanwu Lake. Climbing the famous Purple Mountain will afford you an amazing view of the park and the city, so much to do, but remember "It's Your Choice" The Nanjing Museum, City Wall and Imperial Palace should be on your agenda today and can easily be explored by yourself. Another full day is Purple mountain, which has various attractions including the Mausoleum of the father of China, Dr SUN Yat San. However, as this is the last night in Nanjing, another night of eating, drinking and dancing in the 1912 Bar and Restaurant area could also be on the agenda.

  • Day 7: Zhengzhou

    Zhengzhou - You'll travel to this picturesque regional capital city in the morning, and spend the afternoon getting acquainted with the area at your own pace. This is a great spot to relax in and really wind down in preparation for your final few busy days of the trip.

  • Day 8: Shaolin

    Shaolin Set off early in the morning for Shaolin, home of the famous Kungfu Monks! You'll have the chance to learn this ancient art for yourself, visit Shaolin Temple, or wander around the amazing surrounds, taking in the breathtaking views.

  • Day 9: Luoyang

    After arriving late on the first day, you will spend a full day visiting the awe-inspiring Luoyang Grottoes, sitting on the side of a beautiful valley.

  • Day 10: Xian

    This morning you'll leave the Luoyang hostel and transfer to the nearby railway station. The group generally follows the Trip Leader to the shops where everyone buys a few things for the trip to Xian, which takes several hours. Xian, the start (or end) of the old Old Silk Road and one of China's Four Ancient Capitals, is a city packed full of culture and history, along with great food, beer and friendly locals. After checking in at the hostel, head straight to its well stocked bar, before moving onto food street for dinner!

  • Days 11-13: Xian

    Your final days will be spent in the impressive walled city of Xian. The tour will make its way from Luoyang, before arriving in Xian in the afternoon. On your second day your guide will take you on a tour to the incredible Terracotta Warriors, recently uncovered after 2000 years. You will also have time to visit any of the sites you may have missed so far, such as the Bell and Drum Tower or the Muslim Quarter. In the evening, why not have one last get together with your travelling companions before you all part ways. On the final day, you're free to continue sightseeing or move onto your next destination whenever you wish. Your trip leader can help arrange transport back to Beijing, Shanghai or any other cities.
