13 days

China is a country of incredible diversity, and nowhere is this more apparent than on the road from Xian to Shanghai, on this 13 day tour. Starting off in the historic city of Xian, you'll pass through brilliant unspoilt landscapes, quaint traditional villages, laidback towns and pretty garden cities, before reaching the neon lights bustling noise of the ultra modern metropolis of Shanghai. After spending a few days delving into Xian's rich history, you'll get to visit the village of Shaolin, home to the famous kung-fu fighting Shaolin monks. After a crash course in kung-fu from the masters, head on to Zhengzhou, a great spot off the traditional tourist track, followed by further history lessons at Nanjing, China's former capital city. There's just enough time to take a breather in the picturesque towns of Yangzhou and Suzhou, before hitting the streets of Shanghai.
  • Day 1: Xian

You'll arrive in Xian and make your way to your first accommodation point, where you can take your time settling in and meeting your new travel buddies for the next two weeks. Use the evening as a chance to get to know each other, and the city, by going out for a delicious dinner at one of Xian's many great restaurants. Don't rush your time here over the next two days. There is heaps to see and do, and of course, it's up to you to decide exactly what you want to spend time on.

  • Days 2-3: Xian - Luoyang

We head out early before the crowds to see the amazing Terracotta Warriors, spending as much time here as you wish. On returning to town, you can visit the Bell and Drum Towers, City Walls or wander around the Old Quarter. There's a lot of history to absorb, so get out there! On day 3 spend the morning to take in the sights you have missed so far before heading to Luoyang in the afternoon for the next 2 nights.

  • Day 4: Shaolin via Luoyang Grottos

After arriving the night before, you have the option to spend a full day visiting the awe-inspiring Luoyang Grottoes, sitting on the side of a beautiful valley.

  • Day 5: Shaolin, overnight in Zhengzhou

Set off early in the morning for Shaolin, home of the famous Kungfu Monks! You'll have the chance to learn this ancient art for yourself, visit Shaolin Temple, or wander around the amazing surrounds, taking in the breathtaking views. In the afternoon, it's on to Zhengzhou - if you're not too exhausted from all todays action, this city has some great nightlife to explore.

  • Day 6: Zhengzhou

Stop off in this vibrant city to spend time visiting local sights and museums. You can even head out of town to see the Yellow River which is nearby

  • Days 7-9: Nanjing

Today you'll head to Nanjing, where you will be based for the next three days. Being the former capital of China, it's a great place to absorb some more Chinese history and culture. Take your time visiting any of the many museums, temples and other historical sites - follow your guide on a pre-arranged tour, plus there will be plenty of free time to explore in your own way as well. By night, there's just as much to keep you occupied - go out and paint the town red at any of the late-night bars found in the 1912 bar district.

  • Day 10: Suzhou

Wander through the UNESCO listed gardens, or take a boat trip along the canals of this picture perfect city - the perfect (almost!) finish to your trip.

  • Days 11-13: Shanghai

Shanghai - The final destination! You'll stop and visit the water town of Tongli on the way to the vibrant city of Shanghai. Walk the Bund, tour the French Concession and Xintiandi, visit Pudong and its skyscrapers, take in a performance, go shopping or enjoy the nightlife and bar scene. On Day 13, you're free to move on to your next destination whatever time you wish, or spend as long as you like in Shanghai - in fact, it's highly recommended you spend a little longer here on your own if you can. If you need help arranging further accommodation or transport, your trip leader will be happy to point you in the right direction.
