Summary
Each evening, the team will gather for a daily de-briefing to discuss the work done that day and there will also be a briefing for the following day to ensure there is a sound understanding and structure in achieving the project's goals. Volunteers will travel to the local communities to work on a daily basis and GVI staff will be on hand to assist with the project work. A typical day will normally start very early with a breakfast, before the morning meeting when the day's goals, discussed the night before, will be reviewed and finalised. Equipment will then be loaded into the project boats before deployment to local villages where volunteers and staff will work alongside local villagers to implement infrastructure and improve initiatives. There's a lot of physical work involved here, so we advise that volunteers be prepared for this. You'll be helping to identify plots of land appropriate for cultivation and aid in the construction of vegetable garden and irrigation systems. This will involve creating cement bases for rain water collection systems, cutting and fitting guttering, installing water diversion plumbing and calculating water capacity needs. You'll also spend time in the day designing and installing appropriate solar power systems and investigating ongoing water issues and possible solutions. In the afternoon, the community support team will return to base to relax after a hard days work and then there will be time to prepare dinner, which is made on rotation be the team. In a typical week, volunteers will generally work Monday through to Friday with weekends off to relax or explore the local area. During this time off, volunteers will have the opportunity to arrange dives with local dive operators, snorkel in untouched bays and explore the island group. In your free time, go island hopping around the 20 volcanic islands of the Yasawa chain, scuba dive the various dive sites with abundant marine life and colourful corals or swim in the Sawa-I-Lau limestone caves off the north coast of Nacula Island, one of the most famous natural attractions in Fiji. You can also go snorkelling with manta rays near Naviti Island and with sharks on the Waya reef or hike in the Mamanucas Highlands and enjoy 360 degrees of spectacular views at the top of Malolo Island! This project is certainly the way forward for Voluntourism!
