High Five… Africa

Today’s High Five subject is the world’s second largest continent, and widely believed to be the oldest inhabited territory on planet Earth. These reasons are just some of a few that attract thousands of people each year to travelling to Africa.

Plus, it’s probably one of the most underrated destinations, and can offer you something a world away from the most well-trodden backpacker trails…

Summing up Africa in five easily digestible chunks of prose is going to be tricky… but I’ll give it a crack anyway. One thing I will say is, if David Attenborough’s been there so much, it’s got to be pretty damn amazing, right?

Five Unforgettable Africa Experiences

Relax on the beaches of Zanzibar

Located in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is home to roughly 25 of the most peaceful and jaw droppingly beautiful beaches on the planet. Snorkel, scuba dive, spot dolphins and sip coconut juice as you absorb the sights, sounds and smells of an island that oozes culture, and boasts a fascinating history of spice plantations and the slave trade.

The famous Masai people of East Africa enjoying the finer things in life.

Volunteer! Help out a community, or work with animals

Hunker down in the forests of Uganda with the silverback gorillas; help track Namibia’s desert elephants; soak up the watery world of The Seychelles; mingle with the Masai people; or spend time with the communities of Mozambique, and spread the literacy word to many of Malawi’s underprivileged youth. Giving something back and volunteering in Africa has never sounded so easy, or quite so fun.

Climb the heights of Mount Kilimanjaro

Come back from Africa with a story of awesome adventure and titanic effort by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. It’s only 5896m high so should be a breeze… not! Kili’s peak can be reached on foot without any need for ropes or climbing equipment, but don’t let this put you at ease — climbing this beast of a mountain will require a mind-over-matter attitude. You will laugh, you will cry, you will probably try and run away a few times, but that view from the top, well, it’s a keeper.

Experience a different kind of local wildlife

There’s a very, very good reason that going on safari is one of the most popular Africa activities: it’s just so easy! With an abundance of national parks and reserves, going to Africa and not going on safari would be like going to Thailand and not eating pad thai – it just shouldn’t be done! Don your best safari outfit as you hunt down the Big 5; elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffaloes.

The leopard is one of Africa's Big 5. Can you name the other four?

Marvel at the Pyramids of Giza

Everyone should respect their elders, and since these guys had already been around for 2,500 years by the time Jesus Christ was born, they deserve it by the bucket load. Speaking of buckets, the Pyramids in Egypt are a must for your very own bucket list! Gaze in awe at the only surviving original of the Seven Wonder’s of the World, as you try and figure out the age old question: just how did they build them?

So there you have it, my top five things to do in Africa! What would yours be? Share this post with your friends via the links below.
