Our Travel Photographers Favourite Photos – Week 3

They’ve travelled far and wide throughout Europe and Asia and are back again to share the results of their hard work.

Dan, Ness and Louis are here with their favourite photos for another week, and while Ness and Dan are safely back on home soil we couldn’t resist taking a peek at some more of their awesome travel pics so we’ve asked them to provide us with another favourite snap from their time away.

Take a look at the images below and let us know in the comments box below; which is your favourite and why?

Our Travel Photographers Adventures – Week 3

Welcome Home Dan

A flip reversed view of Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

What/who is the photo of?

It’s an image of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

What’s technically good about this shot?

It appears to be a fairly straightforward image with the gate in the centre of the composition so none too exciting at first glance. But if it holds your gaze for a few seconds it is perhaps because something jars slightly….. the image is upside-down.

The reflected image in the puddle is turned to be the ‘right way up’; not fantastically original, but an interesting presentation of an iconic landmark nonetheless.

It had been raining fairly solidly for a few days so once the sun eventually reared its head, the perfect natural mirror of the puddle had been created in the park opposite the gate to enable me to chance upon it and make a photo.

After I’d taken the photo, the decision to turn it the other way up only came quite late and I just tried it out and found I preferred it more with the puddle image at the top.

Why is it one of your personal favourites?

I like the figures in the reflection near the top left, their broken silhouettes leaving the photo stage-left. The image also has a slight ‘painterly’ type feel I think, which is quite nice and largely due to the reflection.

We catch up with Ness

Not a bad place to hang out and grab a cracking view of Florance

What/who is the photo of?

Two entertaining backpackers that I met in Florence and then subsequently spent quite a long time with sat on this graveyard wall.

Where did you take it?

Basilica Di San Miniato Al Monte, just above Piazzale Michelangelo overlooking Florence.

Why is it one of your favourites?

It is quite an atmospheric shot, what with the sun really low with its rays beaming out from the left of the image, the haze over the city and the guys chilling out. The softness of all the colours contrast nicely with the tree in the foreground covering a third of the shot.

It’s as near to a holiday snap that I’ve got, good times, good memories. I had a great time sat on this wall, with these guys, looking over the whole of beautiful Florence for several hours, chatting and laughing lots. Doesn’t get much better. Oh and it’s a great photo.

What has Louis been up to this week?

Louis' politically charged image from Vietnam

What/who is the photo of?

A young man on a motorcycle passing a Communist Party poster.

Where did you take it?

Another photo from Vietnam, this time from the capital; Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon.

What we’re you trying to achieve with the shot?

I wanted to suggest a connection between the propaganda and the subject so I waited until the man on the bike passed directly beneath the hammer and sickle before taking the photo, however I wanted the reader’s eye on the symbol so a kept the focus on manual to stop the camera from tracking the moving subject.

Why is it your favourite from this week?

There is so much politics and history in Ho Chi Minh City and so much of it is so recent. It interested me to find out how the young Vietnamese people respond to the Party’s philosophy.

One young man said to me; “We were given the right to buy the land we live on a few years ago. I think it’s now time now to leave Communism behind.”

With the young man in front, the symbol behind, and the dates, I tried to show to show this desire to ‘move on’ through this photo.

Another great set of images from our travel photographers this week. If the fruits of their labour have got you hankering for a taste of Asian and European culture. Head to our cheap flights page or give one of our get in touch with one of our stores.
