It’s 357 Days Until Christmas! What Are You Going To Do With Your Year?

Yes, yes, I know; the Christmas hangover hasn’t even worn off from last year yet, but it’s not too early to think about what you want to achieve in the next year – in fact I’d say there’s no better time.

The hope, enthusiasm and motivation provided by the dawn of a New Year makes it the perfect time to set those goals that will enhance and improve your life, and even if you’re already very happy with your lot – there’s always room for improvement no?

Improvements that are kind of like new years resolutions, but are a whole lot easier to keep – because they’re actually fun! Forget the usual ‘lose weight’ and ‘stop getting angry with people on public transport’ promises that are usually made, and if you’re anything like me, broken within the first 5 days, and think of things that will actually help to fulfil and benefit you; now that’s a resolution worth keeping right?

What Do You Want To Achieve This Year?

So, how can you make 2013 really count? Here are some ideas for ways of making this year the best yet!

Learn a New Skill

Learning and self improvement is a big part of the travelling experience. Yes, there will be many a crazy night spent sampling the local home brew with new friends, but you’ll also learn so much about yourself, and the countries you’re visiting.

It’s great to come home from your travels with something other than an empty bank account and a nice tan, so you should definitely look into what you can achieve on your trip.

For instance, why not peel yourself from your sun bed and learn to dive? It’s a skill that opens up a whole new world of incredible sights, so different to anything that you would have experienced before – plus this skill could also prove to be pretty fruitful in the long run too, how do you fancy a job teaching enthusiastic travellers to dive the great barrier reef off the sun soaked shores of Australia? No, me neither *ahem*.

Learning to dive is a great skill to acquire on your big trip

Or what about putting your time to good use and learning a language. If you’re travelling through South America for instance, imagine how special it could be if you could interact with locals? Whether you just want to learn the basics of a language to help you get by or if you dream of an experience that allows you to integrate a little more and for a longer period of time, there are a huge amount of options all over the world.

Make a Difference

What could be more fulfilling than taking some time to make the lives of those less fortunate than you a little easier?

It’s seriously worth considering spending some time volunteering this year. Whether you have just a couple of weeks to spare and want to make a difference or you want to include volunteering as part of a bigger trip, there are so many options that neatly combine the desire to travel, and experience an authentic taste of what life is really like as part of a different culture, with the knowledge that you are also making a real and important difference to the communities or disadvantaged children you meet along the way.

And then there’s TEFL. Gain a recognised qualification that allows you to get paid to teach English abroad, to children that will absorb what you teach them and use it to their advantage for years to come.

Seek Out Adventure

They’re the big adventures we dream of conquering when we picture our time travelling the world, and setting yourself the target of experiencing some of the biggest thrills our world has to offer, is about as good of a New Year plan as you can possibly get.

Scaling iconic landscapes such as Machu Picchu or Mount Everest, buckling up and taking to the open roads to explore the hidden nooks and crannies of Australia or New Zealand in a campervan, dancing your socks of with the carnival queens of Rio de Janeiro or getting back to the very basics of nature and trying to spot the incredible wildlife of Africa on safari are just a few of the never ending list of adventures waiting to be absorbed this year.

A safari is one of the most thrilling experiences out there, and a true 'back to nature' experience

Scare Yourself Stupid

They say the rush of adrenalin you feel when you push yourself to your limit is pretty addictive, and from my own experience, I’d have to agree…

I spent the first 4 months of my round the world trip telling my friends there was no way I was going to be jumping from any bridges in Queenstown, no way – not me.

But while I was there I got caught up in the emotion of it all and, like a lemming, I followed the crowd off of that bridge. And O.M.G I’m so glad I did.

After all that time spent saving, all those days spent dreaming, and all those years you’ll spend reminiscing afterwards, you want to make sure you have some pretty epic, stand out memories to call on and some exciting stories to share down the pub for years to come.

So take the plunge. Bungee jump off that bridge, sky dive from 18,000 ft, swim with great white sharks and do all those other things that scare you this year.

Create a memory that will stay with our forever - whether you like it or not!

Change of Scenery

Travelling is an exciting and jam packed break from the norm. Whether you’re away for 2 weeks or 6 months chances are you will barely have time to stop and take a breath – everyday is full of exciting new things to do, see and try.

And that’s great. But sometimes it would be nice to stop, take a breath and enjoy some normality; just in a much nicer setting than we’re used to here in the UK.

This is precisely why a working holiday visa is such an awesome choice. How does the idea of spending your lunch breaks on Bondi Beach sound? Or your weekends snowboarding on the rolling, mountains of Canada? What about supping post works drinks in Queenstown rather than your usual local pub?

Yep, pretty amazing right? Plus, working abroad gives you the opportunity to save for more adventures while you’re already travelling. Mix things up a little this year spend some time exploring what it’s like to live somewhere so completely different and, quite frankly, a whole lot more exciting.

  2. Couldn’t agree more. Learning a language can not only cure boredom but actually give you a new outlook on life. Nothing like it.
