Ask the Experts: How should I spend two months travelling around Asia on a budget of £6000 for two people?

This week, we have a curious and very valid question on the best way to spend two months travelling around glorious Asia…

My boyfriend and I have booked flights to Hong Kong, where we plan on being based whilst we travel around Asia for two months. We have a budget of about £6000 pounds between the two of us – where can you recommend going, and how exactly should we to do it? Jennifer

We get asked a LOT of questions like this, so we know the Expert advice on offer will fall on many keen ears…

Claire Whittington from STA Travel Brighton says…

Since you are starting in Hong Kong, it would be criminal not to see more of China. Due to visa requirements you now have to provide documentations showing where you are staying and all your transport details so why not let Dragon Experience do the hard work and sort all the travel for you. Dragon Experience use their own vehicles as well as the fantastic China Rail system and local buses to get you from A to B and there is a guide on hand at all times but when you get to each stop you can either stay with the group or head off and explore on your own for a bit of adventure!

Check out some China

If you are on a budget, the small group trips are a great way of managing your money as most of your costs are already paid for so all you will need is a bit of spending money.

I’d recommend the 25 day Hong Kong to Hong Kong trip which takes you to see the Pandas in Chengdu, the Terracotta Warriors of Xian, the acrobatic monks of Shaolin and of course the Great Wall in Beijing. It also takes you to more rural and remote areas of China so you get a more authentic experience as well as seeing all the tourist hotspots.

Take a little stroll along the Great Wall

Your trip will finish back in Hong Kong and from here I would recommend flying down to the islands of Thailand for some much deserved R and R. If you want something a bit more active spend a week on Koh Tao and complete your PADI diving course so you can see all the amazing things Thailand has to offer under the water. It is one of the best places to learn to dive in the world so spend your days exploring the corals and reefs and your evenings sitting in front of your beach hut, fresh fruit smoothie in hand, chatting with your new diving friends about everything you have seen down below!

Lazing on some Thailand beaches is a must

More of a party animal? Head to Koh Phangan for one of the infamous Full Moon parties. Make sure you book your accommodation well in advance or you will end up staying right on the other side of the island which is about a 40 minute drive to the party (fine on the way there, a bit rubbish the morning after!)

After all that time lying on white sands and watching stunning sunsets it’s time to get back to travelling and there are so many options for you. You could keep heading south and cross into Malaysia visiting Penang, the Cameron Highlands and Kuala Lumpur before getting a cheap flight back to Hong Kong. Or you could work your way through Cambodia and then continue up the coast of Vietnam or head up north in Thailand to Chiang Mai before travelling through Laos. Whatever you do make sure you leave a few days for a spot of shopping in Hong Kong before you come home.

Wow! Thanks Claire, that itinerary has made us super jealous. If only we could all do that, right? If you want to know how to book the above give an Expert a call or pop into your local store. Have you got a question for our Experts? Drop us an email!
