High Five… Vietnam!

Neatly snuggled in the heart of South East Asia, Vietnam is a backpacker’s dream destination – there’s nothing missing. Whether you’re keen on fascinating history and culture, breath taking natural landscapes, delicious and diverse national cuisine or if pristine beaches are your bag; this place has it all.

The country has been through some troubled times in the past, but what’s to be found now is a nation of welcoming, happy-go-lucky nationals and a heap of beauty, like a pot of gold at the end of the travel rainbow.

It’s Asia at its most vibrant, so wherever your travels take you in the country, it’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll come away with a special place for Vietnam in your heart.

Whether you’ve reserved 10 days or 10 weeks to explore, there are a few things you simply can’t miss out (actually there are 5 things – hence the name of this blog post), so here’s this weeks edition of our High Five! series, a whirlwind trip through… Vietnam!

Vietnam is a mix of traditional and modern ways of Asian life, making it a great place for travelers to explore.

Our Pick of the Best Five Experiences in Vietnam

Halong Bay

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage sight that lies on the coast just a few hours from Hanoi and offers some of the most awe-inspiring scenery you’re likely to see – not just in Vietnam – but in the whole of Asia.

Hundreds of huge limestone rock formations protrude from the deep green water dotted around the bay and, combined with the atmospheric misty air, offer a beautiful experience unlike anywhere else.

Make sure you spend some time aboard one of Halong Bay’s famous junk boats to get the full effect of the bay from the water and, if you’re brave enough, take a dip by jumping in off the roof.

Halong Bay is one of the worlds most beautiful natural landscapes.

If you’re looking really indulge yourself into the very essence of what Vietnam is all about then there are 2 places you really must visit – a crazy city and a remote hill station.

Sapa is the perfect place to tick the latter off the list; located high within the mountains of Northwest Vietnam, over looking a densely green valley, it offers an authentic glimpse of rural life.

Take the sleeper train from Hanoi deep into the Vietnamese hills and mingle with locals as they harvest from the rice paddies and sell their fresh produce in small local markets.

Sample a taste of life in Rural Vietnam in the Hills of Sapa.

Hoi An

A beautiful town in the centre of the country that is bursting with charm, charisma and some of the most delicious food you could dream of sampling while in Vietnam. Make sure you try the local specialty, Cao Lau noodles during your visit, a noodle dish with pork, bean sprouts and crispy croutons – delish!

Coloured lanterns line the relaxed streets of the Old Town area, and a mixture of street vendors and shops offer a selection of unique souvenirs. While you’re in town, order some bargain tailored clothing – the very thing Hoi An is most famous for.

A town full of charisma - and great food!

Phu Quoc

A serene, and insanely beautiful, beach paradise island that sits in the Gulf of Thailand, just 10 miles from the coast of Cambodia.

With quiet, white soft sandy beaches, turquoise waters and simple traditional fishing villages, Phu Quoc has been Vietnam’s best kept secret for years, but tourism is starting to really take off, so get there quick to experience this backpacker haven, while it’s still a backpacker haven. Google it – and then go. You’ll be glad you did.

A tropical haven... from the moped madness!

This, rather crazy, Asian capital city is buzzing with life and a host of sights, smells and tastes that will smack you in the face as you walk the weaving streets (metaphorically speaking of course…) in fact, we love Hanoi so much, that it wasn’t that long ago we gave it a High Five all of its very own.

Take in the beautiful French colonial architecture of the old quarter, visit the Mausoleum, Hoa Lo Prison Museum, enjoy a water puppet show and dodge speeding mopeds, as you explore this bustling city, which effortlessly manages to balance the modern and traditional sides of Vietnam, providing you with an all encompassing taste of the multi-faceted Vietnamese culture.
