Working as a Festival Co-ordinator in Adelaide

Earlier this year, we sent 8 lucky winners to complete exciting internships in South Australia. Today’s blog comes from one of those winners, Anna, who landed a work placement at The Adelaide Fringe, the largest festival of its kind in the southern hemisphere. She’s now secured a life changing long term role working for the festival. Take it away, Anna.

Working as Festival co-ordinator

Festivals galore

First of all – South Australia is completely amazing. I had the best time ever working for the Adelaide Fringe and now I’m staying on I can’t wait to see the whole festival roll out next year. The city changes beyond recognition and turns into one enormous spectacle.

South Australia is not called the Festival State for nothing. There is literally something on every week, from major music festivals like WOMAD, Soundwave, the Laneway Festival and Future Music festival and smaller events like Asia Fest and Adelaide Cabaret Festival. As a lover of good wine, I reckon the Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations will be a pretty spot on day!

Expect lots surprises when you’re visiting Adelaide. New bars pop up every week and in the most peculiar of places. Down alleyways, in squares – there’s even bars hidden behind secret walls and doors such as Udaberri.

The Adelaide Entertainment Centre and the Adelaide Oval are world class for major touring events. We had a cracking time watching Mr Sexy Back himself, Justin Timberlake, perform at the Adelaide Entertainment centre. I only wish I was able to get my hands on some Rolling Stones tickets at the Oval!

Working Down Under

My work placement introduced me to so many influential people in the arts in South Australia. The program enabled me access to all areas of the Fringe and that gave me a unique insight into the whole set up.

I believe that if you give 100{8105bc8a7da0e4ee2985a05e217cd0e1bef95b551bf8bafd62a449e444182173}, you truly do get rewarded, which is exactly what happened to me when, at the end of my Fringe placement, I was offered a permanent paid position. Working with Adelaide Fringe has already enhanced my existing skills and given me the chance to really excel and do something I love, in a city I love that I can now call home.

If I were to return to the UK, I hope to secure work with another major festival. My time at the Fringe will have given me a well-rounded insight of the set up and I could potentially be placed in a number of roles within a festival organisation.

South Australia VS the UK

The scenery, wildlife and environment change quite drastically in South Australia from town to town – in 20 minutes you can be either be on a beach, in the bush, a city, the hills or a wine valley. South Australians are very laid back: there is a definite ‘no worries’ mentality and people seem to go out of their way to help people they don’t really know.

One thing that both the UK and Australia share, though, is a love of spots. Both countries are football obsessed! Plus, we both like a cold beer and a good BBQ.

What’s next?

I can definitely see myself staying in South Australia. Before I start my contract at Fringe, I’m working on a bee farm in the Yorke Peninsula extracting honey. This is to go towards my 3 month rural work to help me obtain my 2nd year working visa.

Living the dream

I would say the best way to land a permanent role after an internship is to put yourself out there as much as possible. Say yes to anything. Introduce yourself to everyone – make yourself known and become a local as much as possible, as you are much more likely to get help from the people who surround you on a day to day basis. It’s all about who you know – not what you know!

When I entered the program I didn’t think it would have as big an impact as it has. It has and changed me and my life forever. I have a new job and new life in an amazing country and in the best state – South Australia!
