Shave to Raise

Today’s blog comes from the lovely Jemma in our STA Travel Cares team, she works hard everyday to make sure your trips run as smoothly as can be. She’s here to tell us about the fantastic work our STA staff have been doing to raise money for Teenage Cancer…
Shave to Raise

STA Travel stands to encourage, inspire and provide professional advice and help, to young people seeking adventure, a YOLO vibe with a thirst for culture and awesome experiences. Within this, we work alongside CanTeen charity and hope to support all those young lives that are affected by cancer. We want to raise as much awareness as possible to ensure that no young person in the world faces cancer alone. Our very own STA Team members are helping increase the visibility of this great cause, by putting themselves out there, pushing themselves to the limits and becoming an everyday hero!

The STA Travel Cares department, wanted to delve deeper into supporting some of these events taking place within our company. The aim of which is to share love, support and also raise further awareness of the CanTeen cause among our customers. All we have to do is create some global positive vibes which should hopefully lead to more vital donations!
This is Kylie Lucas, she is a Travel Expert from the Palmerston North Store, in New Zealand. On her 27th birthday she ‘Shaved to Raise’. Her inspiring and courageous charity event took place in hope that ‘’the more people that know about CanTeen New Zealand, the greater their impact’’ and she set herself the fantastic target of $10,000 NZD. Kylie wanted to throw herself out of her comfort zone, being a quite reserved person in general, with a huge heart, and great hair, this was definitely a big challenge.

Our Cares team spoke with Kylie and asked her ‘what motivated you towards this charity event?’

“Earlier this year I was lucky enough to listen to Bruce from CanTeen NZ speak to us at our annual sales conference about the work CanTeen do to ensure no young person has to face cancer alone. After listening to his stories, I was really inspired and knew then that I wanted to help raise awareness and funds to help out such an amazing cause!”

Kylie also explained that earlier this year a girl she went to school with was diagnosed with cancer and she has been since inspired by her story.

“I admired her strength and courage through the process of her losing her hair and just her view on life and the way she described what it was like being a female without hair due to cancer, it was then that I realised I was fortunate enough to make the choice of shaving my hair.”

So why not a bike ride, or a charity run, we asked Kylie why she chose the particular ‘shave to raise’ to gain money and support for CanTeen charity.

“A new year’s resolution for me this year was to take myself out of my comfort zone and every idea I came up with involved spending money such as bungee jumping, sky diving etc.Thinking about ticking off my new year’s resolution and the more I looked into the work CanTeen do and the effects cancer has on not only the patient but the whole family I decided that I was going to do my best in helping out the cause and instead of spending money, why not raise money.”

“The main reason why I chose my Shave to Raise was because unfortunately a lot of Cancer patients do not have the choice of losing their hair due to the cancer treatment. I am fortunate enough to be able to make the choice! All I knew when deciding to fundraise for such a great cause, was I wanted to do something big and to me the best fit was shaving my hair.”

STA Travel Cares would like to help provide positive encouragement and thank everyone for their continuous amazing support and positive lovely words towards our Team Members involved in charity events. We know it takes a lot of guts to do something that will push you to the ultimate limit. So a fantastic and hard earned well done to Kylie, for the courageous ‘Shave to Raise’, totalling at a brilliant $7000 NZD.

Tim Fryer
And it doesn’t just stop there; we have Team members all over the globe, showing remarkable support towards the CanTeen cause. Good luck and congratulations to Tim Fryer who is also swimming 1.3 miles to the Isle of Wight for Bestival and another to the beautiful Steph Kallos who has succeeded in raising a whopping £1,150 for Teenage Cancer Trust by shaving her head as well! Let’s also not forget the amazing Liz Swallow, who was the first to achieve the Shave to Raise and looks incredible!
