You’ve woken up in Vancouver itching to see what this city’s got to throw at you. But forget all those has-been chains of the world, this is Vancouver, a city made for hipsters. So, hold onto your beard, it’s going to be a wild ride…
9AM Your ankles are bare and your bow-tie is tight – time for caffeine
Kickstart the morning with the hipster’s favourite: a caffeine hit. Revolver is all about expertly brewed coffee and with a seasonal menu of world-class roasts, these guys know their Arabica from their Robusta. Whether you’re looking to brush up your espresso knowledge or just try an expertly crafted brew, this joint is your one-way ticket to coffee-lover heaven.
11AM Clock strikes eleven which can mean only one thing: brunch
No hipster day would be complete without a brunch stop with fellow non-prescription-glasses-wearing-friends.
Ditch tradition and go Mexican at Bandidas Taqueria. A community-led venture whipping up breakfast fusions straight from a trendy truck with veggie, vegan and gluten-free friendly options. Try the Eggs Benny made with cornbread muffins topped with ranchero sauce or salsa verde – mmmmm yeh!
12:30AM Your polaroid cam is fired up – time to check out the local street art
Thanks to Vancouver’s August Mural Festival, the South Strathcona streets have been transformed into a street art frenzy of colour, pattern and iconography. No wall was spared in last year’s festival, so explore every nook and cranny.
2PM Freshly crafted and Instagram worthy lunch spot in hot demand…
The humble sandwich. It can be oh so right, but it can be oh so wrong too. Pass off those tragic triangles you made at home and try the sandwich-porn subs from Meat & Bread instead.
With specials and different gourmet options at each store, there is plenty to sink your teeth into! The Porchetta with salsa verde and crackling is a must, or if you’re veggie, opt for the classic grilled cheese. Drooooool.
3:30PM Looking for the latest addition to your vintage collection? Time to shop
We’re not sure if this shop classes as cool or downright bonkers, but if you’re looking to get off the beaten track then give This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven a try. Full of taxidermy pieces, voodoo dolls and insect-infused lollipops, this shop has gone above and beyond alternative.
Serving the city since 1997, the Wildlife Thrift store is one not to miss. Chocker block with quality threads, shoes and accessories – not forgetting the homeware section, yes! – you’re bound to find a tonne of stuff you’ll want to take home with you.
Once you’re done shopping, why not hit one of the many skateboard parks for bowls, ramps and the only skate move we know, the 360. Kick it.
6PM You’ve worked up an appetite after all that time spent on your skateboard
One word: Gyoza! The Gyoza Bar is in an old brick-walled heritage building – what’s more hipster than that? These Japanese dumplings are slobber-inducing but if that’s not your vibe then try their ramen dishes instead! The Tamari-Shoyu Tonkotsu Pork is a must-try, delish!
Feeling fancy? Head to Cacao for a $75 7 course taste bud sensation! Get ready for a mix of hearty South American food with a modern twist.
8PM Your patterned sweater has warmed you right up, time for a beverage
With an extensive list of cocktails, beers and ciders, you’ll be spoilt for choice at the Narrow Lounge. Locate the secret entrance to the gothic style basement and try the St Germaine-Rita for a twist on the classic margarita as you enjoy the moody, low-lit space. When you feel sick of being subterranean, check out the patio area where the real party begins and you can even sip on buckets, (yes, BUCKETS) of cocktails.
9.30PM Time for some light judgement in the form of musical talent
To end your day in the city, you can’t beat a bit of live music. Head to The Blackbird, the place to be for Brass Tacks weekends. Groove into the weekend with a whole host of DJs and live performances.
If you’re searching for a weekday music session, try the Fairmont Waterfront hotel which hosts live entertainment every night from 6 til 10pm. This place is all about local and emerging talent so don’t be surprised if you end the night discovering a bunch of new artists to follow!
