Joe King with… the Rt Hon David Cameron

This week at STA Travel Bath, I was quietly minding my own business when, to my utter surprise, (I’m not sure why I’m still surprised, I’ve been doing this a while now) who should not come in, but the Right Honourable David Cameron, Prime Minister of Great Britain & Northern Ireland!

I stood up (which seemed appropriate) and saluted (which, as I was about to discover, seemed inappropriate). Mr Cameron looked confused; his boyish face wrinkled as he tried to understand what on earth I was doing.

I realised my mistake, and quickly moved to cover it up, smoothing back my hair I introduced myself. “Hello Mr Cameron sir, what a surprise to see you here. Please, have a seat!”

Shakedown, Los Angeles

What comes to mind when you think of Los Angeles? Amazing beaches? Glitz and glamour? Paris Hilton? The City of Angels and the surrounding county has it all, and then some.

This week, we’ll be shedding some light on where to go, where to stay, where to shop and what to do in California’s most sizzling city and beyond. Whiten those teeth and flash your best Hollywood smile – we’re shaking down Los Angeles!

The Fame Game in L.A.

What isn’t L.A. famous for? It’s the home of Hollywood, after all, which means it’s also home to trillions of movie locations. Stroll down Santa Monica Pier, and you might feel like you’re in Forrest Gump, or even that modern classic Beverly Hills Cop III.

Be Julia Roberts for a day and get kicked out of the very same posh clothes shop that she gets kicked out of in 1980s movie Pretty Women, over on Rodeo Drive. Bit of a celeb’ stalker? Jump on one of the touristy-but-oh-so-brilliant bus tours of the stars’ houses.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot an actual celebrity. When I did the tour, Dr Phil (yes, the Dr Phil!) came out of his mansion and waved at our tour bus. Best. Day. Ever.

Slap a Snap Gap in Your #YearofTravel!

As the Year of Travel rolls through the wilds of your imagination, it’s time to turn your attention to your own travel ambitions. And what better place to start than with an adventure that celebrates the very best of a region, with a good amount of time to sink your teeth into its culture?

Some call them Snap Gaps; some say Snap Years; others label them ‘mini gap years’; I simply prefer to call them by their proper name: a couple of months’ travelling.

Two months is enough time to unravel, and immerse yourself in the experience. It’s short enough, that with a little planning, you can slip it into a summer of seamless fun, or set off on a sabbatical of untold possibilities.

But where would you travel to? There are some fantastic destinations, that are conveniently located beside each other, and seemingly begging to be explored this year. I’ve rounded up some of my favouruite regions around the world, to give you a flavour of what you could achieve throughout your Year of Travel.

21 Amazing Travel Experiences

We’re not getting any younger. In the time it took you to read this opening couple of lines, you’re already two seconds older. Three, two, one. Now you’re five seconds older. In five seconds time, you’ll be ten seconds older, and in an hours time you’ll be one hour and eleven seconds older than you are right now (I added on a second in case you were a slow reader).

So, with life whizzing by at such a pace, it’s time to make some plans. The kind of plans that will act like rungs on a ladder, allowing you to clamber through the world with a kick in your step.

Ask the Experts: What’s the inside track on Indonesia?

This week our Ask the Experts panellists have got a real challenge on their hands, with the task of unfurling a journey to Indonesia, one of the world’s most diverse and complex countries.

Remember, if you have a burning question, simply email the panellists with your question and you could find it featured in a future edition of Ask the Experts! If things are a little more urgent, you can find these three and plenty more experts in your local STA Travel store.

Craig from Newport in South Wales did just that, with a question about his upcoming travel to Indonesia. Buckle up, here’s Craig’s question:

I’m interested in visiting Indonesia next year, what are the highlights, and how easy is it to travel between them? Craig in Newport

It’s pretty vague; but our Experts are used to going in blind and pulling out the goods. Let’s see how they get on this week…
