Work America – Memories of Hawaii

Today’s blog comes from Jules Sanderson who worked in Hawaii for a summer with Work America

If someone had told me a few years ago I would spend a summer living and working on a Hawaiian Island I would never have believed them. But this year that’s exactly what I did! After finding my job as a receptionist on the island of Oahu (with a lot of emails and a Skype interview) I booked my tickets to The Aloha State.

On the plane over I remember mumbling the place names to myself, trying to work out how to pronounce them and worrying I’d never get them right. Three months later they flew off my tongue like I was Kama’āina (a local)!

Your Time is Now – Summer camp USA

As part of our series on Gap Years, sabbaticals, big trips and everything in between, today’s blog comes from Sarah Richard who spent a summer in a camp in Pennsylvania.

“This is the hardest job you will ever love”. That’s what my camp director told us on the last day of camp after 11 non stop weeks of being a child. I mean being a camp counsellor. Honestly if he’d said that on the first day of camp I would have rolled my eyes (Americans are so cheesy). But, after approximately 73 days of being cried on, confided in and having shaving foam launched at me, I could have thrown my arms in the air and shouted ‘Hallelujah’ (now who’s the cheesy one).

So what is the fuss about working at a summer camp and why do tens of thousands of adults from all around the world sacrifice their summer to work across the US each year?

I asked myself the same question…

Let's be honest, s'mores are a big part of it

Your time is now – working in Australia

As part of our series on Gap Years, sabbaticals, big trips and everything in between, today’s blog comes from David Broadley, a Travel Expert in our Sheffield store.

I’d had enough of the UK, didn’t fancy getting a job, had itchy feet, and I’d met a beautiful Australian girl (we’re all young and stupid at some point) – Down Under it was!

After a summer spent working at a camp in America, a brief stopover in Fiji and a rather memorable month in New Zealand, I arrived bright and breezy into Melbourne (in the rain, not part of the plan), met up with my friend and travel companion from uni and got ready to start my working holiday visa.

Just how fun is it to work at a USA summer camp? Loads! Let’s find out why…

Working in a summer camp is as American as apple pie, and it’s easy for you to get a slice of the action. We check in with Lizzie Spearing, who tells us all about her summer camp adventure…

Personally, working at an American summer camp was one of the best things I ever did. Your co-workers will be your family, your campers will become your children and your camp will become your home. You’ll become more confident than you ever imagined and once bitten by the travel bug, you’ll be forever infected with the need to see and do more. If you’ve seen the Parent Trap and want to look after lots of mini Lindsay Lohans’ (pre-rehab days) then read all about my summer camp experience and sign up for yourself…
