#RTW: Wild at Heart

A round the world trip should be an adventure. It’s a time to do things you’ve never done before, and see sights you never dreamed of seeing. It’s a time to be daring. To take risks. To be courageous. To go… wild.

Here at STA Travel, we know all this. So we got our thinking caps on. Then we put our travel planning hats on. And finally, we put ourselves in your place. And we came up with our wildest round the world route yet. It’s called (funnily enough) Wild at Heart.

Nairobi. Johannesburg. Bangkok. Hanoi. Hong Kong. Beijing. Amazing destinations in their own right. But they’re also all gateways to some of the world’s most unexplored territories.

Take Wild at Heart on our Tripline below, and see for yourself what an adventure this round the world trip can be.

High Five… Volunteering in Latin America!

Volunteering. It’s an amazing way to give something back, gain skills that will stay with you for life, boost your CV, and see the world, all at the same time.

And what better place to do all that than in Latin America? The continent has culture, beauty and adventure in spades, as well as loads of worthwhile projects that needs your help. It’s safe to say that we think volunteering in Latin America deserves a big, fat High Five.

So how do you choose which project to join? Here are five which we think really stand out. Not only are they great causes, but they all last between 1-2 weeks. A pretty different way to use your annual leave, right?

Joe King with… The Middleton Sisters

Cor, you’ll never believe what (probably) happened to me this week. I was quietly beavering away, making travel dreams come true, when who should come in to my now star-studded branch? Only the Middleton sisters!

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and her sister Philippa swept regally into STA Travel and quite literally lit up the room. I will admit I don’t really know what they said for the first few moments. I only know that when I snapped back into focus they were looking at me with some concern and a degree of nervousness.

Ask the Experts: How can I volunteer while I travel?

It’s Friday! Here at the STA Travel Blog, we’re quite excited by this. Why? Because it’s time to Ask the Experts to share their wisdom and answer one of your travel questions.

This week’s question is on a topic that we get lots of enquiries about: volunteering abroad. Not only is volunteering a great way to give something back, it’s also a chance to enjoy a really unique experience on your travels.

Remember, if something travel-related has got you all in a fluster, email us with your question for our Experts.

Now, without further ado, let’s hear this week’s question, courtesy of Andrew in Edinburgh:

I’m looking for somewhere to travel, but also to give back by doing some volunteering. Where do you recommend? Andrew in Edinburgh

Can our Experts inspire Andrew to take the volunteering path? Can they find him that perfect balance between giving something back and travelling? There’s only one way to find out – over to you, Experts!

Slap a Snap Gap in Your #YearofTravel!

As the Year of Travel rolls through the wilds of your imagination, it’s time to turn your attention to your own travel ambitions. And what better place to start than with an adventure that celebrates the very best of a region, with a good amount of time to sink your teeth into its culture?

Some call them Snap Gaps; some say Snap Years; others label them ‘mini gap years’; I simply prefer to call them by their proper name: a couple of months’ travelling.

Two months is enough time to unravel, and immerse yourself in the experience. It’s short enough, that with a little planning, you can slip it into a summer of seamless fun, or set off on a sabbatical of untold possibilities.

But where would you travel to? There are some fantastic destinations, that are conveniently located beside each other, and seemingly begging to be explored this year. I’ve rounded up some of my favouruite regions around the world, to give you a flavour of what you could achieve throughout your Year of Travel.
