Flores

Travel Guide

Don’t let the name mislead you, you won’t actually find many flowers on the island of flowers. It was rather named for its stunning natural beauty of mangrove forests, rolling rice fields, active volcanoes and sandy white beaches. From Flores you can dive in colourful waters and explore Komodo National Park. If Bali gets too busy, Flores can be the perfect place to escape the hustle.

Things to do in Flores

  • Kelimutu National Park
Wake up with a ginger coffee, staring out as the sunrises over the three brightly coloured volcanic lakes, that look as if people have just poured paint into the craters, it's that vivid! The volcano is close to the remote town of Moni, a place surrounded by rice paddies in rural Indonesia.
  • Pantai Koka
Looking for a beautiful beach to lounge on, or to rip up some waves on? Pantai Koka, about 5km west of Pantai Naga, offers both - a double 'bay' with two sides to it: the calm and peaceful side, and the wild wavey side. Break up your surfing or lounging with a fresh coconut under the trees.
  • Liang Bua
Liang Bua is considered a sacred cave among the locals - it was where the remains of the Flores 'hobbit' were found. Guides can take you into the cave, and they're included as part of the entry fee.
  • Gili Motang
Wan to surf Lombok's epic waves or just watch the pros do their thing? Senggigi Beach is your spot. Many hotels, bars and restaurants also make Senggigi the best place to stay when travelling Lombok.
  • Ikat Market
Looking for some colourful hand-woven tapestries from local villages? Then visit Ikat Market in Ende. Weaving is a tradition passed down through generations for the women in the Lio Ende community, and they come here to sell their goods - which can take up to 3 years to produce!
  • Babi Island
This uninhabited island is located 5km north of Flores, and it's the ideal place to go snorkelling. Think typical paradise island: white sandy beaches, clear ocean, fringed by palm trees.
