State guide and travel tips

Home to the show-stopping city of Sydney and the backpacker hotspots of Byron Bay and Bondi, New South Wales is Australia's must-see state. Head to the Blue Mountains for your share of breathtaking scenery, lap up the fine dining and local wines in Hunter Valley, and top up your wannabe surfer tan on Manly Beach. From the trendy restaurants of Darling Harbour, to bohemian festivals and adrenaline fuelled activities, New South Wales is a place that stays with visitors forever.

Places you don't want to miss in New South Wales

  • The Rocks, Sydney
An urban hub that is perfect for those wanting to tick the classic tourist spots off their list – the Harbour Bridge and The Opera House.
  • Bondi to Coogee walk, Sydney
With this coastal walk, not only will you get to visit the famous Bondi Beach, you’ll also be doing a beautiful walk between it and its equally cool neighbour, Coogee Beach.
  • Wattamolla Beach
A beach that’s slightly less well known, but only a 2 hour drive from Sydney, is Wattamolla Beach in the Royal National Park. Think cliff jumping into a lagoon, swimming in a cove and an incredible stretch of beach.
  • Blue Mountains National Park
Travel slightly in land and you’ll get to the impressive mountain range that is the Blue Mountains. Full of bushwalking trails, dramatic scenery, and waterfalls.
  • Nimbin
Go North and you’ll get to Byron Bay, but just half an hour drive West is a surreal village situated in a very pretty valley. Buy tye dye, incense sticks and other quirky items – it’s time to let out your inner hippy! Peace and love, man.
  • Koala Hospital, Port Macquarie
Who doesn’t come to Australia and want to see a Koala? But instead of going to a zoo or posing for a photo with one, think about visiting this adorable hospital for sick and injured koalas, rescued from bush fires and ruined habitats.

When is the best time to visit New South Wales?

New South Wales truly is a year-round destination, with even the winter months (Jun - Aug) seeing balmy temperatures in the 20's, and the summer (Dec - Feb) can climb into the 30's. Summer is peak time due to the great weather, but come in Autumn or Spring and the weather will be good, and the prices will be lower. It’s not just the weather that’s great in Sydders – the state is home to a range of major events and festivals all year. See in New Year’s Eve with the iconic fireworks on Sydney Harbour and party with locals during January’s exciting Sydney Festival. Celebrate Mardi Gras at one of the most vibrant parades in the world, and witness awe-inspiring surf competitions along the pristine New South Wales coastline. This is just the beginning!
