Fraser Island

Sunshine & Fraser Coast

Travel guide & tips

With a name like 'Sunshine Coast' this region immediately pulls you in, and it lives up to it's name: a stretch of coastline starting just one hour north of Brisbane that boasts beautiful beaches, laid-back coastal towns, surfing, and of course, plenty of sunshine. Much like it's counterpart the Fraser Coast, which is home to the well-known paradise that is Fraser Island. If you can pull yourself away from the tanning, lazing or 4WD treks around Fraser, you'll be rewarded with some hidden Queensland treasures - like canoeing the Noosa Everglades, or camping out in the wilderness of places like Inskip Point.

Top places to visit in Sunshine & Fraser Coast

Fraser Island
Fraser Island
Easily accessible from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay, Fraser Island will no doubt be one of the top 3 experiences for any traveller who ventures to Australia. Camping under the milkyway, chilling in the Champagne Pools, floating down a creek, and taking a 4WD for a spin across the beach. The activities are endless, and the beauty is awe inspiring - just have a look at pictures of Lake McKenzie!
Noosa
Noosa
An idyllic coastal town which is an easy stop off on your way down the East Coast, Noosa is an Instagram dream. From it's beautiful beaches and hidden bays dotted along a coastal hiking route, to it's turquoise waters and it's subtropical rainforest... it's everything you expect (and more) from an Aussie beach break.
Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach
This little place could be easily over-looked when you are going to or from your amazing Fraser Island trip, but we're here to tell you that it shouldn't be, and that you should use it as your base! Be sure to check out the Carlo Sand Blow, which is a 'sand dune phenomenon' that stretches for 15 hectares, and overlooks the coloured sands - perfect for a sunset viewing!
Hervey Bay
Want to have a close encounter with humpback whales? Rumour has it that during the migrating season, the whales come really close to the shore of Hervey Bay (FYI Whale watching season is July to November). For the rest of the time, this is a local favourite for a holiday, offering good swimming, diving and sailing, as well as easy access to Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island - the first island on the Great Barrier Reef!
