Ask the Experts: What is the Cheapest Way to Travel North America?

It’s Friday, which means it’s Ask the Experts time again on the STA Travel Blog! Today’s question comes from Stephanie, and we’re talking American road trips:

What is the best and cheapest way to travel North America… My partner wants to do trek America but I feel we can do it so much cheaper as that will be part of our round the world trip? Samantha

Thanks for your question Samantha. We’ve got one of our best Travel Experts on the case for you – what do you suggest Lucy?

Hire a campervan and explore the USA your way.

Lucy Bolton from STA Travel Leeds Vicar Lane says…

North America can be a tricky one if you are travelling on a budget but there are definitely ways around it! I’d say an organised trip is definitely the best way to go about it. A lot of car hire companies in the states tend to charge a daily young driver fee which can work out pretty costly if you are planning to drive around yourselves.

There are also some great hop-on hop-off products such as the Bundu Bus and the Amtrak train passes if you do fancy being a bit more independent, or you could hire a campervan and travel completely freely.

Hire a camper and go your own way.

Personally I think one of our best value adventure trips is the Coast to Coast road trip. It’s a 23 day trip which works out at less then ¬£80 per day for all accommodation, travel, activities and over half of your meals – bargain! The trip takes in so many different places, starting in San Francisco and travelling across Arizona to the southern states, it’s then up through Nashville and Washington DC to finish in New York. The organised tours also ensure a stress-free trip as you won’t need to worry about directions / working out bus timetables / making sure your hotels are in the best locations.

and that is how you plan a USA adventure to remember. Why not send our Travel Experts your travel question, and give them a chance to give you some advice right here on the blog.
