Weekends in New Zealand: Auckland & Waiheke Island

So you’ve got a working holiday visa for the epic country that is New Zealand… great decision! *virtual high fives all around* Trust us you are not going to regret this move. But if you’re thinking how am I going to see this incredible country if I’m working every day? Well, HELLO that’s where your weekends come in!

Imagine spending a glorious weekend on the two gems of New Zealand’s North Island, Auckland & Waiheke Island! Here’s just a little taster of what you could get up to…

1.Climb a sky tower

What about taking to the dizzying heights of Auckland’s Sky Tower? Think you’re brave enough to inch along the narrow walkway at the top? By the way there’s no handrail, nothing but thin air between you and the city 192 metres below. But just imagine waking up on a sunny Saturday morning and taking in a 360 degree view of the city. If that’s not enough adrenaline for you, then try jumping from the tower at 85km an hour! If Beyoncé can do it…

2.Get to know the city

Just spend all weekend enjoying a cosmopolitan city where everyone lives within 30 minutes of beautiful beaches, hiking trails, vineyards, rainforest and over 50 surrounding islands. It’s got a gorgeous sunny climate and a passion for outstanding food – so you’ll eat like a king the whole time you’re there! New Zealand’s largest city offers the perfect mix of urban sophistication and a laidback lifestyle.

3.Escape to Waiheke Island

In the evening escape to nearby Waiheke Island, known as the jewel in Auckland’s crown, only a 35 minute ferry ride from downtown. It’s a haven full of beautiful vineyards, olive groves and white sandy beaches. A Waiheke Island wine tour is a must! Spend a Saturday night drinking wine and soaking up the gorgeous views. If you’re not up for drinking, hop on a local bus and explore the island for yourself! Apparently Waiheke is all about the views, vines and wines. A weekend well spent if you ask me.

4. Discover some hidden gems

Take time to discover somewhere a little different in New Zealand, explore the village of Oneroa on Waiheke Island. You’ll find quirky art galleries, an eclectic mix of shops and some great cafes and restaurants. For a start, you’ve got ‘Shop the Rock’ for all of your souvenirs, grab fresh cup of coffee at the ‘Waiheke Island Coffee Roasting Co.’ or go for dinner at ‘Caita Miro’. On Waiheke Island you’ll discover some of the best seafood dishes, locally grown produce and award-winning wines New Zealand has to offer. It’s such a hidden gem that’s well worth a little weekend visit!

5. Go zip lining!

If you’re looking still looking for a little adventure but can’t face jumping off Auckland’s Sky Tower (we don’t blame you), then zip-lining is the one for you! It’s a mix of adrenaline, speed and nature. You’ll fly smoothly, side-by-side with a friend through Waiheke Island’s stunning forest soaking up the gorgeous views. What a way to enjoy New Zealand!

See it’s not all work and no play! In fact, play more everyday. There are so many things to do on your weekends in New Zealand, make the most of your time there. Check out how you could spend your weekends in Queenstown and Taupo.
