5 Vegan hotels for travellers powered by plants

According to the Chinese calendar, 2019 was the year of the pig. However, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’d know it was more like the year of the vegan.

Maybe you’re all for #plantpower or maybe you’ve had enough of your hipster mate Byron banging on about pickled everything and how you just absolutely must watch Netflix’s documentary ‘The Game Changers’ (although you really should, it’s pretty eye-opening).

Whichever side of the veggie patch you sit on, veganism is bang on trend right now and it’s made its way into the travel industry. Hoteliers are biting the bull-et and people are rooting for more to jump on the bran-wagon. Seriously, vegan hotels are a thing now.

So, as another Veganuary approaches, we’re taking a look at some of the best vegan hotels out there.

 1.Vegan Surf Camp, Moliets-et-Maa, France

Who doesn’t want to live the vegan life and hit the waves in the south of France? Well, we’re guessing non-vegans and non-surfers. But still. It sounds like a health and fitness freak’s dream, does it not?!

This campground-come-hotel is every bit as Instagram cool as it sounds. Think chilled vibes, surfing and yoga-ing all day and refuelling with scrummy vegan food (obvs). It’s all organic, seasonal and locally grown, so there is minimum impact on the environment and it helps to support local businesses. Even the surfboards are eco-friendly and regionally made. Plus, they’re big on recycling and composting and set up weekly beach clean-ups. Surf’s up, bro.

2. Heritage Auckland Hotel, New Zealand

Think you won’t find a vegan hotel in the country where the sheep-to-person ratio is seven to one?! Think again. Heritage Hotel in the land of the long white cloud has joined the plant-power gang. The hotel tries to be as sustainable as possible and sources its products from local suppliers, even using soy-based ink on its menus and using food waste for worm farming. And the restaurant is the country’s first to achieve Vegan Certification from the New Zealand Vegetarian Society. Sweet as!

It may not sound vegan, but we promise it is. The Farm’s vibe is all about healing through a five-step journey: diagnose, cleanse, nourish, repair and sustain. Its chefs use only organic vegetables, herbs and leaves grown on-site and picked a few hours before they hit your salivating mouth. They’re also big fans of healthy cooking techniques and getting experimental with dehydrating, sprouting and fermenting.

Mix that in with yoga, meditation and a jungle setting and you’ve got yourself a nice little getaway. Wicked, wicked. Jungle is massive!
