Travel guide

With crumbling ruins like the Parthenon temple, ancient cities like Athens, and paradise islands such as Mykonos and Santorini, Greece is a glorious assault on the senses. Think of white-washed buildings, views for days and azure Mediterranean waters, beautiful local Greek dishes and hedonistic nightlife, all washed down with tales and remnants left over from mythical legends and Gods.

A selection of our favourite Greek islands (plus the ancient capital)

It's a mad world out there, and we could all benefit from a tahini piece of paradise now and again. Enter the Greek Islands, bobbing away in the midst of the Aegean Sea and laden with all the good things: cheese, olive oil, sun, sand and mythical legends. White-washed fishing villages and mouth-watering mezedes take centre stage 'til sundown, and then it's on to ouzo and plate-cracking parties!
Athens has seen its fair share of transformations over the years, and thanks to the 2004 Olympics, 21st-century Athens is a sight to behold - from crumbling buildings that transport you into the city's ancient past, to the heart of the capital which is packed with museums and restaurants. Make sure you check out the legend at the Parthenon temple, on top of the Acropolis.
Known the world over for its hedonistic nightlife, fashionista crowds and sweeping beaches, you can easily get lost in the white-washed maze of houses in the alluring island of Mykonos. Take a dip in the azure water of the Aegean or sip on an Ouzo and watch the sunset over the iconic windmills. Don't forget to have a night out while you're there - there's a reason it's known as a major party island!
There's plenty of reasons travellers fall in love with the magic of Santorini - white-washed buildings and churches, unbelievable views, world-famous sunsets (top tip: watch one from Skaros in Imerovigli) , charming local villages like Fira and Oia, great seafood, and swimming spots on black-sand beaches. The island is also known for the volcanic caldera, so make sure you check that out while you're there.
The beautiful backpacker haunt of Ios is a stomping ground for youthful fun and frolics - although in the summer it can be a booze-fuelled destination (think fire-juggling bartenders and face painting), it's still pretty easy to lose the crowds if you're looking for something more authentic. Get lost in winding streets, rent a car and drive out to the rural countryside, check out the sweeping viewpoints, or spend your days kicking back and sunbathing while sipping on some tasty Greek cocktails.

The weather in Greece

Greece benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with year-round sunshine, rainy winters and hot summers. The best time of year to visit is April-June or September-October, where it's still warm and sunny (in the mid-20s) but helps avoid the tourist crowds going in peak summer season. If you're looking to visit the islands, then summer officially begins in May, which is a good time to visit before the temperatures start to creep up into the 30s in July.
